SINGAPORE : The Budget is usually not a good time for smokers and this year was no different.
With smoking contributing to nearly 2,500 deaths a year in Singapore, smokers will once again have to pay more for their habits.
A pack of cigarettes is expected to cost 20 percent more.
Duties on tobacco products will be increased immediately, from $293 per 1,000 sticks to $352.
Delivering his Budget statement in Parliament on Friday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says the intention is to curb smoking, especially among younger Singaporeans.
But there is something to drink to - no increase in alcohol taxes.
There will also be changes to the way horse betting is taxed.
Instead of tax on each bet, betting profits or winnings will be taxed.
This will allow Singapore Turf Club to offer better odds and lower prices to better compete with illegal gambling operators. - CNA
