SINGAPORE: A survey has shown that a large number of Singaporeans support a smoking ban in entertainment outlets and hawker centres, while almost 7 in 10 of those surveyed support a smoking ban at entertainment outlets.
6 in 10 said no to smoking at hawker centres and coffee shops, and 9 in 10 want smoking banned in open areas like beaches, parks, and dining areas.
The survey also showed that non-smokers were also more likely to show support than smokers.
Most of the people spoken to were for the ban against smoking in public places.
Some of them are smokers who see the need for such a ban, especially at playgrounds and at places where there are children.
The findings of the survey are comparable to similiar surveys done in other countrries.
A public poll in California showed 60 percent of those surveyed supported a ban in bars, while a survey in the United Kingdom showed that almost 60 percent of those surveyed were in favour of a ban in pubs and railway stations. - CNA
