LTA raises speed limit for light commercial vehicles

SINGAPORE: The speed limit for light commercial vehicles has been raised from 60 kilometres per hour (kph) to 70 kph.
These vehicles comprise light goods vehicles and small buses with maximum laden weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes and seating capacity of up to 15 passengers.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says the revised speed, effective from Monday, will allow these vehicles to travel faster and narrow their speed differential with other vehicles with higher speed limits.
This will improve traffic flow on the expressways without compromising road safety.
However for safety reasons, the speed limit for light commercial vehicles transporting workers and small buses without seat belts for passengers will remain at 60kph.
The speed limit for light commercial vehicles was last revised in April 2001, when it was raised from 50kph to 60kph.
As at 31 December 2004, there are about 96,000 light commercial vehicles in Singapore. - CNA
