SPARKS flew during the trial of murder accused Took Leng How yesterday as Deputy Public Prosecutor Lawrence Ang crossed swords with the sole defence witness, Dr R. Nagulendran.
Dr Nagulendran, who is testifying for Took, spent about four hours on the stand defending his diagnosis of the 23-year-old vegetable packer as a schizophrenic.
Took's hopes of avoiding a murder conviction rest on the credibility of the psychiatrist testifying in his defence, and DPP Ang pounded the doctor with questions, probing for holes in his theory.
Tempers began to fray and the two raised their voices several times, often cutting each other off in mid-sentence.
Dr Nagulendran also complained on numerous occasions that DPP Ang's questioning was 'unfair' and, at one point, even scolded his interrogator.
'For god's sake, please try to understand what psychiatry is about before asking these questions,' he protested.
At that point, Justice Lai Kew Chai intervened and tried to explain to the psychiatrist why his diagnosis might provoke 'controversy'.
Dr Nagulendran's conclusion, drawn from three meetings after Took's arrest, centres on the accused's stated belief that three Chinese men were responsible for killing the eight-year-old girl.
Calling this his 'primary delusion', the psychiatrist explained that despite being told there was no evidence to suggest that three men committed the crime, Took refused to accept any other version of events.
DPP Ang argued that the story was just another attempt by Took to evade responsibility and retract his previous confessions to the police.
Dr Nagulendran admitted that Took had told many lies, but insisted that these tales were spun to support his basic delusion.
DPP Ang then showed Dr Nagulendran a series of charts detailing the number of times Took had both knowingly lied to the police and changed his statement.
Since Took was prone to lying to the police, he argued, could he not be lying to his psychiatrist, too?
But Dr Nagulendran insisted that, given the close relationship Took had with Huang Na, he would have expected him to display 'anger or sorrow', whereas he showed very little emotion.
Could he then be 'hiding his guilt by appearing nonchalant', the judge asked.
The psychiatrist maintained this was possible only if Took consciously killed the girl and wanted to convince everyone that he did not do so by putting on an act.
His diagnosis, he said, was based mainly on two central factors: the 'bizarre, motiveless, senseless and brutal' murder, and Took's own muted reactions after it.
Describing Took's mood as 'inappropriate', he said the accused felt nothing when asked how he felt about her death and was constantly smiling when he described the episode.
Though Dr Nagulendran said he pointed out to Took that he had already confessed to the crime, he continued to stick to the story of the three Chinese men.
'When that happens, we ask ourselves, is that a sign of a psychiatric condition?' he said.
The trial continues today with psychiatrist G. Sathyadevan taking the stand for the prosecution. -

SINGAPORE : A psychiatrist testifying in the murder trial of Took Leng How, accused of killing 8-year-old Huang Na, said Took was not suffering from any mental illness.
Dr G. Sathyadevan from the Institute of Mental Health told the court that Took did not qualify for the defence of diminished responsibility.
He said Took appeared mostly calm during their interviews and was coherent and rational in his speech.
He also noted that the accused showed no sign of any grief about the loss of Huang Na and he was neither depressed nor suicidal.
Took's psychiatrist Dr R. Nagulendran had said previously that Took suffered from symptoms of schizophrenia - something Dr Sathyadevan disagreed with, saying Took had no delusions or hallucinations.
The defence will cross-examine the prosecution's psychiatrist on Thursday when the trial continues. - CNA/de -

And also, dun forget she still has a very young child in China. She will likely have phobia leaving her younger child behind, after her first child's death. I'm sure she will be back just before the verdict. But she will only stay for a short few days. -

Dun think that reason will be enough for her to travel all the way back to China. Being trailed by mata is no big deal to her anymore, since she is not employable here (everybody knows her face already and she will never get a work permit here anymore). SINGAPORE : A forensic pathologist testified in the High Court that he found injuries on nine parts of Huang Na's body, but none around her neck.
This contradicts the accused Took Leng How's earlier testimony that he had strangled her.
Dr Paul Chui was giving evidence on the eighth day of the murder trial of Took who is accused of causing the death of the eight-year-old girl.
Dr Chui said although the girl's body was found 21 days after her death, it was relatively well preserved by the layers of plastic that she was wrapped in.
Huang Na is said to have suffered injuries to her lower jaw, back of her neck and head.
These appeared to have been inflicted by hard objects.
Dr Chui also used a dummy in court to demonstrate how Huang Na could have been suffocated to death, with someone covering both her mouth and nose for about three to four minutes.
The pathologist also revealed that no seminal fluids were found in Huang Na's vagina nor was her hymen torn.
But he stressed that this alone is not conclusive that the girl was not sexually attacked.
Dr Chui said this was because semen can disappear with time.
When questioned by the public prosecutor, Dr Chui said that in a five-year research on more than 130 cases of unnatural deaths involving children, none were caused by blows to the head.
Based on the forensic evidence presented by Dr Chui, defence lawyer Subhas Anandan told the court he would need to consult with another expert witness before cross-examination.

SINGAPORE : The Huang Na murder trial has been adjourned for lawyers to make their submissions and a verdict is expected in about a month's time.
On Thursday, accused Took Leng How's lawyer said the opinion of the prosecution's psychiatrist was biased and his report incomplete.
Counsel Subhas Anandan took Dr G Sathyadevan to task for allegedly ignoring signs of Took's mental illness.
The forensic psychiatrist from the Institute of Mental Health had testified that Took did not qualify for the defence of diminished responsibility and that he did not suffer from schizophrenia.
But defence counsel Subhas said Dr Sathyadevan's report could not be relied on since he deliberately ignored certain facts. For instance, the issue of Took's alcohol intake before the alleged crime, his bouts of insomnia and his supposed delusions.
The lawyer also questioned the doctor why he did not interview Took's parents or his housemates, choosing only to interview one of his co-workers.
Dr Sathyadevan replied he did not think these issues were relevant to the case.

Besides, she believes that Ah Hao is the murderer. Even if she fears looking at him, it is because she has labelled him as a brutal murderer who has killed her daughter.
Which newspaper did you read? I go downstair and buy. Or can you scan and put up here for me to read?
If it is Wanbao or Xingmin, the reporters will sure write something about why she avoided (their reporters are a lot more curious to write this kind of details)
