SINGAPORE : The smoking ban was extended to more public places starting on Saturday, but many smokers were still unaware of this latest development.
Reminders were pasted on the walls at the Bishan Bus Interchange.
Still, many smokers weren't on the look-out for the ban that kicked in on Saturday.
Within an hour, officers from the National Environment Agency caught five smokers in the act.
Two elderly smokers in their 60s got off with a warning, but not a 19-year old smoker, who got handed a S$200 fine.
Many smokers said they didn't stub it out because they were not aware of the extended ban.
Said one man, "I didn't know when it takes effect. I was just talking a walk and I didn't see the 'Look Here' notice."
Those who were handed a summons hoped the authorities would enforce the ban with a lighter hand, and give smokers more time to get used to stubbing it out at these public places. - CNA /ct
