you've got 2 tanks which you need to transfer fluids back and forth..
you put a huge pipe in between the two tanks... but put small little valves on the two tanks..
you can keep changing the size of the pipe but the flow rate is still limited by the capacity of that two valves...
is that simple enough?

big pipe into small valve...so.. building a crooked bridge with many lanes = same problem.. even bigger pipe into a small valve
