SINGAPORE: More motorists were caught for drink-driving ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
23 drivers, including three women, were arrested in a four-and-a-half hour islandwide operation early Saturday morning.
This brings the total number of drink-drivers caught so far this year to 222.
Normal road blocks were set up along North Buona Vista Road, Bishan
Road, Yio Chu Kang Road, Jalan Kolan Ayer, Republic Boulevard and
Outram Road just after midnight.
At 2.30am, simultaneous road blocks were set up at River Valley
Road, Hill Street, High Street, New Bridge Road and Clemenceau Avenue
to ring-fence entertainment outlets in the area.
During the operation, 53 motorists were also summoned for other
traffic related offences, including speeding and failing to buckle up.
The drink-drivers arrested are aged between 22 and 52 years.
The highest breathalyser result clocked was 64 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
This exceeds the legal amount of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
First-time offenders found guilty of drink-driving can be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to six months.
Repeat offenders face a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
