Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested today that Chinese and other vernacular newspapers be translated into the national language to avoid any misunderstanding and to promote better race relations.

So that the Malay could know what the Chinese. And both would know what the Tamils are saying, and vice versa.
The national newspapers would then be like out town council newsletters.

why not the Malay national newspapers publish what the Indian or Chinese communities are saying, and vice versa
