Last Friday, media rivals Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and MediaCorp said they were merging their television and free newspaper operations. MediaWorks' channels U and i plus MediaCorp's Channels 5, 8 and TV Mobile will form a new company called MediaCorp TV Holdings. Channel U will continue to be aired but the fate of Channel i is still undecided.
Since then, MediaWorks staff, and television news staff who are employed by SPH, have been left wondering how the merger will affect them and their careers. So the company invited Mr Wong to speak to staff.
At least 400 people turned up at the meeting to get answers. Some had to stand as all seats were filled at the auditorium at SPH's office in Genting Lane.
SPH CEO Alan Chan, MediaCorp group managing director Shaun Seow and senior managers from both companies also attended the meeting.
A manpower committee comprising senior human resource executives from both sides and chaired by MediaCorp independent board director Soo Kok Leng will decide which MediaWorks employees and SPH television news staff should be offered jobs in the new company.
