How hard it can be to turn our attention within! How easily we allow
our old habits and set patterns to dominate us! Even though they bring
us suffering, we accept them with almost fatalistic resignation, for we
are so used to giving in to them. We may idealize freedom, but when it
comes to our habits, we are completely enslaved.
Still,
reflection can slowly bring us wisdom. We may, of course, fall back
into fixed repetitive patterns again and again, but slowly we can
emerge from them and change.

When you open your eyes, that’s the world seeing itself. When you listen, that’s the world hearing itself. When you touch, that’s the world touching itself. When you taste, that’s the world tasting itself. The world is conscious through you.

Zen Master Chinul:
The self-nature is just your own mind. What other expedients do
you need? If you ask for expedients to seek understanding you are like
a person who, because he does not see his own eyes, assumes that he has
no eyes and decides to find some way to see. Since he does have eyes
how else is he supposed to see? If he realizes that he has never lost
his eyes, this is the same as seeing his eyes, and no longer would he
waste his time trying to find a way to see....Your own numinous
awareness is exactly the same. Since this awareness is your own mind,
how else are you going to understand? If you seek some other way to
understand, you will never understand.

A practitioner held a bunch of flowers in his hand and with great sincerity offered it to the Buddha.
Buddha then requested him to place it down. After placing the flowers in front of the Buddha, Buddha again requested him to put the flowers down. This time the practioner was puzzled and asked the Buddha, "Honorable Buddha, I have already placed the flowers in front of you, what else is there for me to put down?"
The Buddha replied immediately, "This also you have to put it down!"
Upon hearing this, the practitioner attained enlightenment immediately.

Rather than run away from what you don't know, just be willing to stay with not knowing. Then love and compassion appears. People run away from 'don't know' to ideology, to religion. They would rather watch television than not know. If you hang in there with 'don't know', then you will see something that you didn't see before.

Saṃyutta NikÄya, 20. Opammasaṃyutta – 7 Āṇi ~ The Drum Peg
At
SÄvatthÄ«. “Bhikkhus, once in the past the DasÄrahas had a kettle drum
drum called the Summoner. When the Summoner became cracked, the
Dasrahas inserted another peg. Eventually the time came when the
Summoner’s original drumhead had disappeared and only a collection of
pegs remained.
“So too, bhikkhus, the same thing will happen with the bhikkhus in the future. When those discourses spoken by the TathÄgata that are deep, deep in meaning, supramundane, dealing with emptiness,
are being recited, they will not be eager to listen to them, nor lend
an ear to them, nor apply their minds to understand them; and they will
not think those teachings should be studied and mastered. But when
those discourses that are mere poetry composed by poets, beautiful in
words and phrases, created by outsiders, spoken by [their] disciples,
are being recited, they will be eager to listen to them, will lend an
ear to them, will apply their minds to understand them; and they will
think those teachings should be studied and mastered. In this way,
bhikkhus, those discourses spoken by the Tathgata that are deep, deep
in meaning, supramundane, dealing with emptiness, will disappear.
“Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus: ‘When
those discourses spoken by the Tathgata that are deep, deep in
meaning, supramundane, dealing with emptiness, are being recited, we
will be eager to listen to them, will lend an ear to them, will apply
our minds to understand them; and we will think those teachings should
be studied and mastered.’ Thus should you train yourselves.”

Each form, each particle, is a Buddha. One form is all Buddhas. All
forms, all particles, are all Buddhas. All forms, sounds, scents,
feelings, and phenomena are also like this, each filling all fields.
-Pai-chang
Happiness cannot be found through great effort and willpower;
but is already present, in open relaxation and letting go.
Don’t strain yourself, there is nothing to do or undo.
Whatever arises in the body mind has no real importance at all.
Why identify with it and become attached to it?
Why pass judgment upon it and ourselves?
Far better to simply let the entire game happen on it’s own,
springing up and falling back like waves,
without changing or manipulating anything,
and notice how everything vanishes and reappears,
magically again and again, time without end.
Don’t believe in the reality of good and bad experiences;
they are like the weather, like rainbows in the sky.
Wanting to grasp the ungraspable, you exhaust yourself in vain.
As soon as you open and relax, ( this tight fist of grasping)
infinite space is there - open and inviting.
Make use of this spaciousness, this freedom and natural ease.
Don’t search any further. Don’t go into the tangled jungle,
looking for the the great awakened elephant,
who is already resting at home, in front of your own hearth.
Nothing to do or undo.
Nothing to force,
nothing to want,
and nothing missing.
Marvelous!
Everything happens by itself—- Free and easy!
