Heart Sutra

When Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is practising the profound Prajna-paramita,
He sees and illuminates to the emptiness of the five skandhas, and thus attains deliverance from all suffering.
Sariputra, matter is not different from emptiness, and Emptiness is not different from matter.
Matter is emptiness and emptiness is matter. So too are sensation, recognition, volition and consciousness.
Sariputra, the emptiness character of all dharmas, neither arises nor ceases, is neither pure nor impure, and neither increases nor decreases.
Therefore, in emptiness: there is no matter,
no sensation, recognition, volition or consciusness,
no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind,
no sight, sound, scent, taste, tangibles, or dharma,
no field of the eye up to no field of mental consciousness,
no ignorance or the ending of ignorance up to
no ageing and death of the ending of ageing and death,
no suffering, no cause of suffering,
no ending of suffering, and no path,
no wisdom and also no attainment.
Because there is nothing obtainable,
Bodhisattvas through the reliance on Prajna-paramita
have no attachment and hindrance in their minds.
Because there is no more attachment and hindrance,
there is no more fear, and
Far away from erroneous views and wishful-thinking,
Ultimately : The Final Nirvana.
Buddhas of the past, present, and future all rely on Prajna-paramita
to attain Annutara-samyak-sambodhi.
Therefore, realize that Prajna-paramita
is the great wondrous mantra,
the great radiant mantra,
the unsurpassed mantra, and
the unequalled mantra.
It can eradicate all suffering, and
It is genuine and not false.
Therefore, utter the Prajna-paramita mantra -
Chant :
Gate Gate Paragate Parasmagate Bodhisvaha! -

Sangha seems to have new insights on Emptiness after the retreat. Perhaps he can discuss with us.
But one can only point the way, but Buddha Nature is for one to see for himself. How can one show you that which is beyond forms, beyond words, beyond sounds? That which is non-arising, and non-ceasing - unconditionally original.
Those who grasp the essence of dharma shall see the Buddha Nature.
"Someone who looks for me in form or seeks me in sound
is on a mistaken path and cannot see the Tathágata." - Diamond Sutra
"'Whoever sees the Dharma sees me; whoever sees me sees the Dharma." - the Buddha -

As to the Dharma, this is transmitted from heart to heart, and the recipient must realize it by his own efforts. From time immemorial it has been the practice for one Buddha to pass to his successor the quintessence of the Dharma, and for one Patriarch to transmit to another the esoteric teaching from heart to heart.
The true mind can be transmitted via energy that would empty our mind temporarily and make us feel really peaceful and easy no matter what the medium is. That’s why Mahâkâúyapa smiled on the Spiritual Mountain.
If youÂ’d like to experience it. There are many ways to do it. My advice is try to feel it from the sutras or any master who has the ability to do that. Personally, I recommend reciting the Diamond Sutra or studying the Platform Sutra.
Some of you may think this is outrageous and it's not the orthodox Buddha Dharma. In fact, it has been kept as a secret in the School of Patriarch ChÂ’an. And before the Sixth Patriarch, only a patriarch-to-be was eligible for transmission. However, Master Hui Neng shared it with all his pupils and all ChÂ’an masters thereafter. Since the energy is transmitted via media, it fades and accumulates with space and time. ThatÂ’s why I recommend the above Sutras. They have been blessed and strengthened by numerous masters.
However, not everyone can feel the transmission right away because barrier may block the transmission. Reciting the Diamond Sutra will remove the barrier gradually.

Yes, there is indeed nothing to show.
The Buddha HIMself did not say anything about it. Neither did all other masters, even though they all have the ability to transmit their heart. They'd like us to realized it by direct inference. Well, what more can I say? I am not trying to persuade anyone here. Anyone with Dharma eyes or above would be able to see it, yet they do see nothing. -

What is to be awakened?
How should we reply? The purpose is for us to realize ‘what it is’ through direct knowing. So there are two sayings from Ch’an masters,
If you open your mouth, then you are wrong. (kai ko gi tsou)
If you come up a thought, then you are in the wrong direction. (dun nien gi guai)
ItÂ’s beyond languages and words. ItÂ’s non-dual. Anything we say about it is dual and wrong. Yet, how does a master know whether a pupil is enlightened or not, if his pupil cannot open his mouth and express it? ItÂ’s simple. The pupil can still speak or write. ItÂ’s only a matter of how he doest it. If he uses his analytical mind then he is wrong. If he uses his true mind then he is right. And how can we tell the difference? WeÂ’ll know if we are enlightened.
And by the way, if we are enlightened, we'll find ‘something’ there that we don't perceive it as ‘something’. But there is actually something there we clearly realize its existence. That is exactly the same thing that Master Hui Neng said in the Platform Sutra,
"I have an article which has no head, no name nor appellation, no front and no back. Do any of you know it?" -
To continue, I'd like to share with you what constitutes enlightenment?
There are three realizations involved,
1. To realize there is nothing.
2. To realize there is something.
3. To realize non-duality. Nothing is something. Something is nothing.
For some ppl, they are realized step by step. They can also be realized all at once.
My English is not good enough to express it, so I wrote a Chinese version.

i recently heard the word 'zhao1 jian4' that give me a deep insight. i recall the Heart Sutra also use it at the beginning as in above. BUt the above did not emphasis the word 'zhao1 jian4'. 'zhao1 ' is like to reflecting on one's mistake in the mirror. jian4 is look.

There are two explanations for 'guan1 zi4 zai4 pu2 sa4'. One is the well known Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The other means whoever can observe everything with easiness. Personally I prefer the latter. I think the above means:
When one has practiced observing(or mindfulness) with easiness long and deep enough and therefore be enlightened, one's true mind shines like the Sun on everything and realizes that everything is just the reflection of its light and there are no five skandhas and suffering. -
Hi all.. I've been watching this space.. pls keep the discussion going..cos I am rather dense in understanding the sutras.
Is nirvana a state of emptiness? Is it possible to achieve a state of "emptiness" yet feel compassion for others? If compassion is an emotion tht arises from consciousness, is that still considered emptiness? -

Emptiness is not empty. Only emptiness can reveal the great love inherent in our true mind. When everything is unconditioned, it is called emptiness. -
concur... emptiness/sunyata is not nothingness. i think to achieve a state of "emptiness" ..*IS* to feel compassionate for others. As there's not self but all others. consciousness is just transform into wisdom rather than emptied.

Nirvana is not a state of annihilism... and emptiness is not absence of something. Emptiness is emptiness of substantial, inherent existence. Everything in our world arises out of Cause and Conditions, and are never permanent, it is always changing. No two moments are the same, therefore there is no substantial existence.
So, what is nirvana? Nirvana is not a place or a mental state, it is beyond time and space. As long as you have any mental attachments, aversions, impurities, then it is impossible that you can enter Nirvana, and will remain in Samsara as a sentient being. -
Our Buddha Nature is full of compassion. And it is impossible for us to be compassionate unless we are 'Empty'... empty of self-views, 'ego-form', selfishness, and awaken our Buddha Nature.
"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." - Albert Einstein -
We are all to attain the Dharmakaya, Fa Shen or Truth Body. And what's Dharmakaya or Ji Guang jing Tu? It's the Entire Dharma realm! You become like Everything or All Oneness. If all sentient beings become you, how can you not have compassion for them...it's part of you.
That say, 'Enlightement is when the wave realised it's the Ocean.'

Everything we perceive, think and doubt is the wave generated from the ocean, is the finger pointing to the moon. Just retrace the wave of our thoughts back to its origin then we'll know what the ocean is.
And it’s best to retrace it by asking a question. Such as ‘Why am I alive?’ However, this question can be a good start only. The best question would be a question that is unable to break it down anymore. If we can find the ultimate question, and retrace it, it will be much faster.
The ultimate question would be: Where is X from?
And what does X stand for?
