i am the one who started it, why aim him?Originally posted by Eye in the Sky:I did not start it, if you may ask.
.. you supported this notion as you quoted in your earlier post .. recall?
Erm, I agree 'walk with Buddha' is a little weird, but 'hear his teachings' is ok mah...Originally posted by laurence82:i have no idea, but its for u guys to see
As long as i have been reading up on Buddhism, or been reading this forum, i have never seen anyone uses terms such as 'walk with Buddha' or 'hear his teachings'
These particular terms are used commonly in another faith though, referring to someone else.
Hope its just a wild guess and not an accurate conjecture.
pardon me, but even if there is difference in the way u guys inteprete it, one should remain humble....Originally posted by maggot:I have already found out more than you do about Buddha

As for reach the other shore... it's mentioned in sutras, one of them Heart Sutra in the mantra. It means crossing over the sea of samsara to the shore of liberation.Originally posted by laurence82:reached the other shore? whats that?
hmm cool stuff, so what Buddhism got to say on time in this context?
There's no need for sarcasm here ... pls be forewarned. Who is qualified to teach you? You are your own teacher (that is ... if you understand what is meant here) ... by any standards your egotistical attitude has already shrouded you in the darkest of mental capacity to realise anything of substantial substance, other than going through the normal life cycle of eat, sleep, ya gerti yah . I think you have failed.Originally posted by maggot:You don't need to teach me. You are not even fit.

I have already found out more than you do about Buddha
then i gotta disagree with Eye in the Sky, unlike most here, i am not even a practising BuddhistOriginally posted by An Eternal Now:As for reach the other shore... it's mentioned in sutras, one of them Heart Sutra in the mantra. It means crossing over the sea of samsara to the shore of liberation.

There are no past Buddhas?? Look at your own quote above? "... met and learnt from countless [b]Buddhas before ." I don't know your real intention to contradicting yourself. That is of course you intended it that way. Only you know best ... with the benefit of the doubt. However, looking at it from all mental angles, I think the odds are that you were not consciously doing it ie errata!
If not, I think Hui Neng would have been grossly disappointed == "What is your face before your parents are born?"
Anyway ... if anyone can recall ... Buddha expounded on Cause and Effect, and later on, if you realised, and consequently it leading to Effect becoming the Cause. It's a cycle. But you need to be neither ... nor ...

Self proclaimation (if that's what I think you are doing) of self-belief is not going to get you enlightened. I think no one will be fit to 'walk with you'.
What did you find out about Buddha ... share with us!

but even as u can adapt buddhism into ur life, there are core fundamentalsOriginally posted by Eye in the Sky:Don't be the local 'Buddha'. Buddhism is universal, it transcends but yet embraces Universality. If you think Buddhism is only applicable to a certain 'group-agreeable' subset of relevancy or 'hush-hush can't connect to this or that term used elsewhere by other groups of people', then seriously I think Buddhism has fallen into the backwaters of a truly great philosophy and way of life.
Don't be the proverbial 'frog in the well', dropping back to the solace of 'group' therapy to feel accepted or to be on the 'right' track.
If everyone saw the same thing, then they saw nothing at all ... ccf Hui Neng's 'wind and flag' koan.
The path to Enlightenment is not for faint-hearted!
i would agree to that actually. Everyone can reach Enlightenment, even those with an unpure mind! Hui Neng realised that too. That's why he said the world of his time, even the present world (the 21st century) is not ready to 'receive' the Sudden Enlightenment approach.Originally posted by laurence82:but even as u can adapt buddhism into ur life, there are core fundamentals
for example, the five precepts, reincarnations and so on
or else, anything, and everything can be used...
self cultivation = presenting themselves with perfect mannerism?Originally posted by Eye in the Sky:i would agree to that actually. Everyone can reach Enlightenment, even those with an unpure mind! Hui Neng realised that too. That's why he said the world of his time, even the present world (the 21st century) is not ready to 'receive' the Sudden Enlightenment approach.
That's one of the main reason why Dharma teachers throughout the world still 'enforce' the Gradual Enlightenment approach on their student, and require those on the 'path' to have lots of self-cultivation thus placing maximum emphasis on precepts etc. It's just a means to the end (ie Enlightenment).
However, it is also a trap, if not done properly or explained. Many people fell into it, trapped in its web. They'd mistaken that self-cultivation IS the key to Enlightenment. NO! Absolutely NOT. These people behave and present themselves like they don't have a spot of imperfection on them, with perfect mannerisms, very cultured. But it's not! Attachement to self-cultivation as the means to the end (ie Enlightenment) is the bottomless pit one must avoid.
Anyway ... agree to disagree .. or .. disagree to agree
no, not that way ... self-cultivation should be towards mental cultivationOriginally posted by laurence82:self cultivation = presenting themselves with perfect mannerism?
i think thats a misuse of the words self cultivation
just like being educated doesnt mean holding a scroll of paper....or maturity doesnt go with age
hmm, thats precisely what i am saying...Originally posted by Eye in the Sky:no, not that way ... self-cultivation should be towards mental cultivation
Remember ... the body is just the vessel for the mind to do its work, ie reach enlightenment in the lifetime of the body!
That's how most followers are conducting themselves ... a well polished mirror projecting an 'image' of the yet un-realised essence of the Buddha nature ... nothing wrong in that! The world would be a better place BUT if you want to realise enlightenment ...
interesting analogies you gave ... why not
so ... there you go ... maintaining the no-mind ... well ... another story ...Originally posted by An Eternal Now:Cultivating our moral conduct is better than cultivating our actions.
