The most common meditation done in Buddhism is the Anapanasati Meditation, meaning the meditation on mindful breathing. Being aware and focused on breathing. As I have mentioned it is always best to learn it directly from a qualified teacher. Even chanting can help if you can concentrate well on the chanting. But if you can do meditation regularly it will be good.Originally posted by simplified:hi ..

Different sutras have different teachings. All Buddhas teach according to the conditions and needs of the people, so each sutra has different 'purpose' although ultimately it points towards enlightenment. Sutras are the recorded words of the Buddha giving sermons.Originally posted by simplified:sorry for the super late reply..
thanks for all the help..
can i hav all the other buddhist sutra and their purpose?
i mean wats the sutra reali meant for? for calm mind or eliminate of any desire...watever

Short of some sutras that can be used for self cultivations.Originally posted by An Eternal Now:Different sutras have different teachings. The Mahayana Sutras
Suttas of the Pali Canon
Why is that so? From the 1st list, other than the sutra on Amitayus which focuses more on other-power (but is also not lacking in self cultivation instructions), all other sutras were related to self-power, self cultivation. Seems like you have not read much yet.Originally posted by maggot:Short of some sutras that can be used for self cultivations.
I refering to the 1st list.
Yes, we all must have different 'yuan' to read different sutras. Some people also had particular affinities with certain sutras. Just practise hard on what the Buddha says... all sutras are skillful means for sentient beings to reach the ultimate goal.Originally posted by maggot:Hmm...well it's ok that we read different sutras![]()

Thank you for your explanation, yes indeed like I said.. the Mahayana canon includes plenty of rich and sophisticated teachings and methods to enlightenment which are not found in the other canonOriginally posted by bohiruci:Like the many sectarian teaching in Mahayana Buddhism ,it will depends on which path u will like to take
Pureland Buddhism is towards the seeking of rebirth to the Western Paradise

Chan Buddhism focus on meditation , illumination and riddles to awake on the True Nature .
Tientai Buddhism focus on the Great Contemplation of Visualization and Mahayana Anapansatti .which was based upon the teachings of Tientai Master Chih-i
Mind-Only School focus on the Mind pheonomenon and directs the mind to Great Realisation
Flower Adornment School concentrate on the Dharmadhatu practice and non-obscured views matter and reason .
True word or Esoteric (mi zong ) , concentrate on the use of Mantra and visualisation of Buddha and Bodhisattva in practice for Inner Experience
and invocation of blessings
All in all
the Mahayana Teachings can be divided into the school of Emptiness and school of Virtual Formness in Emptiness .
and for the layman ,they are categorised by this 2 stream.
Sudden Awakening and Gradual .
