it makes me realise that i should learn to be more patient and more forgiving to my mother who i do have some hidden grudges with.
Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha selfness and kindness are tremendous... It hard to find people who are willing suffer on behalf of others ( that they don't even know of ) and to deliver all beings, regardless.. evil spirits to deva etc etc to liberation.
Thx for the sharing of the sutra, hope to know more abt this pusa. -
Then Samantabhadra Maha Bodhisattva replied, ""I have come to know about the punishment of evil deeds through actions, words and thoughts long ago. I earnestly hope that my compassionate One will kindly speak about the law of Cause and Effect so that every being of the future generation will learn the lesson from you to abstain from doing bad deeds, but to practise meritorious ones by aiming to attain Buddhahood.''

Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva said again, "My compassionate One, the punishments in Hells are as real as such. There are Hells where the tongues of sinners are used as ploughs. In some of the Hells, the hearts of sinners are pulled out and eaten by Yaksas. In some Hells, the sinners have to be put into boiling tanks and be boiled to death. In some of the Hells, sinners are forced to embrace burning brass pillars. In some of the Hells, sinners are circulated by burning flame."

Inside some of the Hells, it is extremely cold, where sinners are frozen to death.
In some of the Hells, sinners have to float among the dirt of urine and manure.
In some of the Hells, there are flying iron weapons, which crush the sinnersÂ’ bodies.
In some of the Hells, there are burning spears, which pierce through the suffering sinners.
In some of the Hells, the hands and feet of sinners are made to hold or walk on burning irons.
In some of the Hells, the bodies of sinners are curled around by iron snakes.
In some of the Hells, sinners are chased by iron dogs.
In some of the Hells, sinners are forced to ride on iron asses.
People who have committed sins by killing, theft, adultery, lying, slandering, abusing, gossiping, craving and anger have to be cast into the above Hells for punishment without any chance of escape. -
My compassionate One. The weapons of punishment in the various Hells are innumerable in kinds, either made of brass, iron, stone, or fire. The stubbornness of all beings is as strong as brass, iron and stone, which are difficult to break.
The power of Cause and Effect on sinners is as dangerous as fire, which will spread rapidly and burn things to ashes. If I am to speak about the sufferings of Hells in detail, there are hundreds and thousands of various kinds of suffering in each Hell. Evidently, there will be more sufferings in more Hells.
Under the supernatural power of our Honoured One, the Shakyamuni Buddha, and at your kind request, I am now only relating the sufferings in Hells very briefly. If I am to speak about the sufferings and punishments in Hells in detail, I cannot fully express them, even through kalpas and kalpas. -

that's if YOU could remember how to chant the buddha's or bodhisattva's names in the midst of tortures and torments WITH A SINCERE HEART AND MIND AND FOCUS. if you could do that HERE AND NOW, then you don't have to think about hell. the description of hells by Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha cannot be finished even in a single sutra unless you want to go through them to personally experience and see for yourself. during the chaotic and agony of mind sufferings and physical pains, if one could remember CLEARLY and sincerely repent and recite buddha's or bodhisattva's name, one will be immediately be lifted from the hell sufferings.Originally posted by gamesharkuser:without any chance of escape even chanting buddha's name??? -
because of the vows of a bodhisattva, he is CLOSER to sentient beings. a bodhisattva is a highly enlightened being but postponed buddhahood to save BY GUIDING hearing the sufferings of sentient beings first. a bodhisattva is a buddha-would-be in future. we need to reach out to him also 1st and thats equally reaching out to buddha FOR GUIDANCE, SUPPORT, BLESSING AND PROTECTION.Originally posted by Cenarious:why not become an omniscient buddha and help more ppl?

actually, there is nothing to be scare of hell if u r good person, no matter which religion u believe in.
my grandma is a very sincere buddhist. she has been to hell in her dreams, she saw horse and cow hell guards .
when she chanted Amitofou, the gates open
then inside she saw a giant bat, Amitofou again,
and she is brought back from her dream.
If u repent for yr sins, the heavens will know.
I myself have been to different realms in my dreams.
some are not pleasant, and i seem my relatives in hell, while in dreams,
but all of them are now buddhist

i think everyone of us ever been to hell before. imagine the countless lifetimes we had from countless aeons ago...... just that we may not be able to remember them. our life can be understood backwards but it must be lived forward from here.
amazing that some people can "enter" the realms of hell or in some cases even come face to face with amitabha buddha or maitreya buddha in their dreams..... sometimes i wonder are they real?
i have ever dreamt of amitabha buddha. he looked huge and happy in my dream. he looked almost like the typical image portrayed in pictures or statues and he was "teaching" me in my dreams about "emptiness is form, form is emptiness" and he keep smiling smiling smiling in the dream (he was moving not still in my dream) and said to me "i am amitabha buddha".....kekee......
sometimes i have feelings like as if i am going to "somewhere" in my sleep. it didn't feel like a place that is of lively bright place. it was like maybe i was going to descend to hell? - gloomy, eerie, very yin atmosphere and seem "endless" kind of journey. but i quickly woke up. because at that time (that was a few years back) i was very very "attached to my world" so i was scared to go if i couldn't return.
but now.... i think i am more prepared to let go..... -

there was once i dreamt i saw a very scary looking creature like lizard-crocodile kind of monster off white silverish in color sliding just beside me which i could almost touch it. but strangely in the dream i was not at all afraid not even a trace of fear.
then i saw a group of people lining up to go somewhere.... i don't know, like as if they were waiting to be picked up. their faces looked gloomy, some still faces with no expression and i was like almost joining them but in the dream i "woke up" and walk away after observing them.
very weird strange dreams kekee....

Ksitigarbha (Sanskrit, "womb of the earth" ) Ksitigarbha assists beings in the six realms and is an emanation of the Dhyani-Buddha Ratnasambhava - one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. He is particularly well known and venerated for assisting beings in the realms of hell. Holding a jewel, the symbol of the Ratna family, a jewel, he is sometimes called the Jewel Bearer.
Samsara (Sanskrit, "running around" ) Comprised of the six realms wherein dwell Devas(Gods), Asuras (Jealous Nature Spirits), Humans, Animals, Hungry Ghosts and beings in Hell. These beings continue to revolve in the six realms until they attain Enlightenment and realize that the realms are merely states of consciousness, thus freeing them of the need to be reborn in one of these realms. -
The Five Dhyani Buddhas were originated from the Adi-Buddha.
Adi-Buddha (Sanskrit, "First Awakened One" ) is the primordial Buddha and the source of all phenomena. Although formless, the Adi-Buddha is represented by Vajradhara.
Vajradhara (Sanskrit, "Thunderbolt-bearer" ) Symbolizes the Primordial Buddha. He is typically represented as sitting in the lotus position with his arms crossed on his chest and his hands holding the bell and vajra.
Vajrasattva (Sanskrit, "Diamond Being" ) Viewed as the chief or the union of the five Dhyani Buddhas, Vajrasattva's practice is the most important of the Four Preliminary Practices. This is because Vajrasattva eradicates negative hindrances accumulated since time immemorial. He is typically depicted holding a vajra in his right hand, next to his chest, and a bell in his left hand, next to his left thigh.
The Five Dhyani Buddhas:-
Akshobya (Sanskrit, "Immovable" ) He is usually depicted with his right hand forming the Earth Witness Mudra (the hand is pointed towards the earth and is turned inward). He embodies the Mirror-Like Great Wisdom which takes sense impressions and the idea of individual forms and recognizes the inherent emptiness of them all.
Amitabha (Sanskrit, lit. "Boundless Light" ) The embodiment of compassion and wisdom, he is typically depicted as red in color, with his hands held together in the Meditation Mudra(the right hand rests on the left hand with the tips of the thumbs touching).Embodying the Wisdom of Discriminating Vision, he transmutes perception into inner vision.
Amoghasiddhi (Sanskrit, "One Who Accomplishes His Goal" ) He is usually depicted with his right hand forming the Fearless Mudra (right palm raised and facing outward). He embodies the All-Accomplishing Wisdom which transforms the will into the egoless activity of the Buddha.
Ratnasambhava (Sanskrit, "Jewel-born One" ) He holds his right hand in the Wish-Bestowing Mudra (the right hand is pointed towards the earth, with the palm facing out). He embodies the Wisdom of Equality, by which feelings are transformed into love and compassion.
Mahavairocana the Great Sun Buddha, is typically depicted as white in color and holds either the Dharmacakra Mudra (the thumb and index finger of each hand form a circle and are brought together) or the Supreme Wisdom Mudra (the five fingers of the left hand wrap around the index finger of the right hand). Embodying Transcendent Wisdom, Mahavairocana transforms the ego-bound consciousness into universal consciousness.
