but is really up to you.... malas can be made of any kinds of materials
its only meant to be a tool... most important is your sincerity in chanting, chant with a non-wavering mind -

i have a 28 beads mala of pink crystals which i use for chanting to keep track of the counts.
any mala made of any material is fine as long as you feel comfy with it.
i keep them nicely on the altar like precious gems when i don't use them.

My mu-huan mala is $10 and I consider it quite expensive for a mala. -
Even have free of charge. My dharma teacher gave malas for free if she gave instruction for someone to chant and he/she dont have mala. Some shi fu in Singapore give for free too. I also receive one from Jiu Hua Shan's (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's Mountain in China) abbot

oh so i don't count in the big bead is it?
yeah it doesn't look pink in the picture also but it is really pink when hold it and look closer comparing with other crystal colors. -
i saw the real thing too.
light pink, very nice.
