monks salary....

i know this sounds corny or what....but i just have a few questions... are monks given any salary or allowance...?? cos i saw this particular monk near my house who everyday take cab to wherever he wanna go. i also saw monks before carrying PDA and latest handphones. forgive me...but i tot monks have made a vow against materialism??...can sum1 enlightened me?...

I heard a monk's allowance is around $100 a month. Monks may need to take cabs because someone calls them up for emergency things - like he needs this monk to come here and speak the dharma to someone who is dying. PDA and Handphones may be gifts from lay disciples. We may never know.
But it is also true that some monks are materialistic because they have not renounced in their mind.
But my point is we may never know so we should nevertheless pay our respects to them and not think otherwise. -

Even if a monk receive lots of donations, usually what he will do is to use the money to propagate the dharma. The surplass will be decided by the head of Sangha, it may go to the charities.

aiyah u tink these monks dun hav a job meh??...some of dem are CEO of some big company de lehz, dun be surprised....i bet u hav seen b4 monks driving mercedes??....yeah not dat dey are materialistic but hey, this is the 21st century??.........

But being an Abbot, i think $6000 is quite little esp for the upkeeping of monasteries (where he lives) etc, i think.
A normal monk usually only $100 or slightly more. -
Sorry to correct here... monks are not supposed to have jobs for commercial purpose alone.... but dharma-related jobs are ok, and receiving salary must be of reasonable amt. e.g dharma propagation, funeral services etc?

Hi
Some centers allocate a sum of money called "Allowance" to the monks each month. This money is for them to cover their transport, food, lodging, petty purchases during their stay at the center.
Cash, credit card, car, PDA phone. By themself they are neither sinful nor pure. Rather they are tools required to survive in modern societies. Outside of society, like say in forests or Buddhist places, some do survive on just their robes and bowl. -

Can you not see that many people are in fact evil beings creating havocs to righteous religions? They molest children, lead religious wars, alter buddha's teachings, use gods as a tool to acheive powers, etc.
Such evil people are everywhere, even those who feel themselves being good, have also a portion of their brains manipulated by such things. What to do except to study original scriptures handed down from the past, do not study scriptures written by monks nowadays. -

Unless you only understand ancient language, otherwise you should also study the buddhism book written by monks which can effectively relate to our modern life. -
While it is true that there are influence of maras, there are corruption in some sanghas, but it is your plain ASSUMPTION that many monks are like that. Many many venerables are truly highly enlightened. Even if you dont know them much, I believe you should not anyhow make judgements.
Buddhism is lack of religious wars. We seldom hear of molestation cases within the sangha either. Buddhists dont even worship gods. Buddhists do not generally alter Buddhist teachings, that I am not aware of, unless you are speaking of the unorthodox Buddhist traditions, yes I am aware of that.. that is why I have stated that the forum does not recognise certain traditions.
It is important as a Buddhist to learn under an authorized Buddhist teacher. It is important to receive guidance from an enlightened teacher to guide us towards Enlightenment. Even the Buddha himself have said so
