"Lightening" others' Bad karma

I read up about ppl who suffer are paying off their karma debts.
example: A person who is suffering from illnesses and is in pain.
If one was to voluntarily help to take care of that person, Is the voluntarily helper lightening the person's bad karma or the sufferer still need to pay off his debts in some ways? -
No, it is his virtuous karma to have you to help him. That is why it is possible for virtuous karma to help 'lighten' the bad karma in a sense.

Yes. Its possible to suffer in place of others. In this manner, you are sort of "taking away" or "lightening" his bad karma.

But I personally believe you can heal yourself. Intent is very important. -

And another thing is, in Buddhism this kind of Blessing/Jia Chi, although can be very effective, is not called 'suffering in place of the other'. Although it is through that sometimes by jia chi if the person karma too strong the person who bless him will become affected, but this is less suffering compared to his suffering.
It is also possible that I bless you in meditation - by a visualisation process.. which I do not know and I do not practise. Some others in the forum might know. -
it is practiced by tibetan buddhism ,by exchanging oneself for other
to bear the sufferings of other onto oneself
When Buddha Sakyamuni in one of the past life fell to hell,He saw a person carrying a pot of seething hot liquid on his head,and suffering and crying
He think to himself ,"Since I will also have to carry that pot of hot liquid , may I
bear the burden of all sentient beings already suffering and yet to come to suffer of carry the pot of hot liquid .
With His Compassion ,all the pot of hot liquid on the people's suddenly disappear and with His merit He ascended to the heaven ....
This is part of the practice in Tibetan Nyung Nay retreat and Tonglen practice -
I believe there is one also practised by the Chinese mahayana - because my dharma teachers and shi fu practised that... unfortunately i cant remember what. But yes during the visualisation it is visualised somewhat like that, that the karma/sufferings is removed from him. But cant remember the details.

To pay off one Karma is to be responsible for the cause of the action and willing to bear the consequence of the action.

I believe a venerable could answer this question better. Everyone has different karma which can lead to different results. { Different condition and causes etc }
one way to lighten a person's karma is to help the person to walk back to the right path. One must also need the wisdom or seek reliable help to help the person if it involve a stubborn person or a hard to handle difficult situation. It is important to have the right intention to begin with.
Cut the root of the problem is important. -

Awakening is like trying to illuminate a light bulb ,If the tungsten is already spoilt , no matter how you use external lighting to illuminate this bulb , the light bulb will never glow .
Fortunately we are not lightbulb , we have the potential to change our tungsten readily in this Saha World -

"Karma" means action. It refers to the intentional deeds we do with our body, speech and Mind through action, talking and thinking. Karma is the law that every deed done, given the conditions, will bear certain fruits.
If an action brings pain and misery in the long term for oneself and others, it is unwholesome or negative Karma. And if it brings happiness, it is wholesome or positive Karma. Actions are not inherently good or bad - they are only so according to their motivation s and the consequences they bring. Whatever happiness and fortune we experience in our lives comes from our own positive actions, while our problems result from our own negative actions.
alexkusu you need to understand tat there is no one that decides the "rewards and punishments" for what we do. We create the causes of our actions, and we experience their results. We are responsible for our own experience. The Buddha discovered the law of Karma - He did not create it. (No one created it.) By teaching us the law of Karma, the Buddha shows us how to work within the functioning of cause and effect in order to attain True Happiness and avoid pain.

Have you ever notice that when a person close to you are suffering or unhappy you will also be affected? When there is economic depression in Amercia, the rests are also affected. We are all inter-related.
IF, the person who is suffering now lash out anger on his surrounding and people, he is again creating new cause again and thus a new result occurs. The only way to cease this endless cycle is practising mindfulness, compassion and developing the wisdom to learn and stop oneself from performing harmful acts thus cease oneself from committing more bad karma..
It is not possible to put karma debt on someone else tab but another person (out of compassion ) can intervene to relieve the person who is suffering in some ways but cannot really get rid of it.. and the extent of relief we can give also depends on how heavy the original karmic afflictions is. -
