The Buddhist view of life-releasing is not to make it an event , but secretly
does it to allow sentient beings from gaining freedom from capture
casino_king,out there encashing on his "tools" to denounce Buddhist practice
I have read several story of Ming dynasty Patriach of Pureland ,Lian Chi
He used official money to engage in life-releasing and upon discovered by court official
He was sentenced to death.
but His Faith in Amitabha created a change -there is an Amnesty that day and He was released
Venerable Lian Chi began spreading the goodness of life -releasing and It is said his disciple saw ray of light emitted from his mouth when he recite Amitabha
There are still other ways of life -releasing
Like ,when i was working on my computer , I noticed ants dropping into the cup of plain water .without hesitation ,i saved them with my finger
It is the greatest merit of one to alleviate one's suffering
that is the deeper meaning of "life releasing"

Actually, my shi fu long long time ago already ask ppl not to do 'fang shen' outside his monastery bcos of many cons and bad things that happened. Instead, he ask ppl to 'Hu Shen' (protect life), and take up vegetarianism. This has more long term benefits. Anyway the 'fang shen' practise in ancient times may not be suitable for modern times.Originally posted by sinweiy:90% died, they say.
but i tot 100% more would ended up on dinning tables instead.

Yes, we must always, to our best effort, to Shui Yuan Fang Shen.Originally posted by bohiruci:Like ,when i was working on my computer , I noticed ants dropping into the cup of plain water .without hesitation ,i saved them with my finger

Life-releasing is not a "tool" to attract rotten form of compassionate
It should be one to denounce the mercenaries out there![]()
Just to add on, and maybe to forgive me if this was mentioned before. I do feel that other than doing life releasing, life-protecting is also very important. Acts such as abstain from consuming live seafood, be mindful of the living things around us wherever we are (even when we are walking), or not use insecticide to creatures at home etc. These acts of compassion could be cultivated into our daily living, and not just do life releasing once a year, while enjoying consuming living animals over the rest of the year.Originally posted by neutral_onliner:Buddhism teaches that to be a truly balanced and complete individual, you must develop both wisdom and compassion.Like a pair of wings, lose either one the bird can't fly. This oso apply to us.Develop spiritual quality but fail to develop any wisdom. The result is that you end up being a good-hearted fool, a very kind person but with little or no understanding. On the other hand like science, believe that wisdom can best be developed when all emotions, including compassion, are kept out of the way. The outcome of this is that science has tended to become preoccupied with results and has forgotten that science is to serve man, not to control and dominate him.
So we all have to use our wisdom to carry out our compassion

Yes, I agree with you, that either life releasing, or life protecting has to be done out of compassion, not out to receive any good fortune in return. As a learning buddhist, we ought to be mindful that whatever good that good, the intention has to be to service the sentient beings, rather and asking for any good karma or good merit. That's cultivating compassion within self.Originally posted by paperflower:so far in my live i have never done anything like releasing lives of the animals to redeem their freedom. yes now i understand the purpose but since i know it now, if i release is because it will give me good karma or good merit then i will not do it..... cos it is not pure genuine practice which the intention is not free from conditions and has an attachment to "if i do good, i expect good back".... but if i "hear" the animals crying out to be released from their sufferings then out of pure compassion responding to their cries, i will help set them free. it is not because i want the merit or good karma anymore. it is because i heard their cries......
I agree that it's very difficult to uphold the 5 precepts. I have similar occurence in my bathroom. Just to share on experience, water does drown these little living creatures, and by taking a shower, I'll be killing them. Most of the time, i'l try my best to evacuate them to the nearest grass patch, using all sorts of "tools" like tissue papers, papers etc. Of course, by doing so, I could be committing another form of killing by introducing them to their natural predators like frogs, spiders. My perception is that in this way, they will not die "unaturally". For those that are killed unintentionally or intentionally, I would suggest dedication of merits to them, so that they will reborn in a higher realm because of you. There's no way that a human will not kill, because there are many big and small creatures around us, that we breathed in, stepped on daily. I'm sorry that I do not have a concrete solution to your problem, but I'm sure other seniors in this forum will be able to advice constructively on your difficulty.Originally posted by paperflower:regarding one of the 5 precepts of not killing lives....., recently i found alot of very tiny "maggot-like" ants i don't know what they are called....? baby maggots?all crawling lying around in my backyard on the walls, washing machine and even some landed on my clothes which were hanged out to dry...... don't know where they came from. and whenever i entered the backyard, i felt body itchy and even my scalp also itchy like as if those tiny maggots-like ants might have fallen on me......
in this case if you were me what would you do? kill or just let them be?

10 000 dollar ? so exaggeratingOriginally posted by geforce:i heard from my mom that there is a newly imposed fine of $10,000 if caught for life releasing.. can anyone verify this..
maybe for birds, cos sometimes they release pigeons, and the pigeons will have baby pigeons, and so on and so forth, they will crowd out the barely exist nature habitants.Originally posted by geforce:i heard from my mom that there is a newly imposed fine of $10,000 if caught for life releasing.. can anyone verify this..
