last time a sri lankan monk (confirm monk....he wear the robes one..and we went to the temple) give metal amulets to my family also, got one buddha one for my father and three Pu2 Sa4 one for other members of my family...why?Originally posted by An Eternal Now:Hmm... but amulets has nothing to do with Buddhism. Although it is a common accepted Thai culture with Brahmanistic influence.
Amulets is OK - its just like having a picture of your girlfriend/boyfriend in your wallet. Sri Lanka doesnt have the tradition of amulets as strongly as Thailand.Originally posted by laoda99:last time a sri lankan monk (confirm monk....he wear the robes one..and we went to the temple) give metal amulets to my family also, got one buddha one for my father and three Pu2 Sa4 one for other members of my family...why?
so some sri lankan monks practise brahmanism at the same time and give out amulets?Originally posted by An Eternal Now:Amulets is OK - its just like having a picture of your girlfriend/boyfriend in your wallet. Sri Lanka doesnt have the tradition of amulets as strongly as Thailand.
In Thailand amulets are known to possess many protective powers, etc. They may be right, who knows, I don't use amulets but it must be noted that they are not linked to Buddhism but an old tradition called Brahmanism.
Sri lanka dont have as much influence from Brahmanism as in Thailand I think.Originally posted by laoda99:so some sri lankan monks practise brahmanism at the same time and give out amulets?
it is very confusing becoz all these pple who give out amulets are call "high monks"

Because of greed, fear and ignorance. As soon as people understand the BuddhaÂ’s teachings, they realise that a pure heart can protect them much better than bits of paper, bits of metal and a few chanted words and they no longer rely on such things. In the teachings of the Buddha, it is honesty, kindness, understanding, patience, forgiveness, generosity, loyalty and other good qualities that truly protect you and give you true prosperityOriginally posted by laoda99:so some sri lankan monks practise brahmanism at the same time and give out amulets?

for u info The Buddha considered such practices as fortune telling, wearing magic charms for protection, finding lucky sites for buildings, prophesising and fixing lucky days to be useless superstitions and he expressly forbade his disciples to practise such things. He called all these things 'low arts'.
"Whereas some religious men, while living off food provided by the faithful make their living by such low arts, such wrong means of livelihood as palmistry, divining by signs, interpreting dreams, bringing about good or bad luck, picking the lucky site for a building, the monk Gotama refrains from such low arts, such wrong means of livelihood".
