http://www.4ui.com/cart/sichan.htm1)´ÖÄס rough mind residing - sever the reckless mind
2)¸Äס fine mind residing - become routine/habituos of meditating, body are more still.
3)Óû½ç¶¨ desire realm stillness - able to tame the mind
4)δÀ´ìø future jhana - body felt almost transparent. taming of mind is almost natural. one's ready to enter the real jhana.
1)³õìø first jhana/meditative state - one feel that the body is moving, but it's a pleasant feeling. the taste and smell consciousness almost disappear. no more attached to desire of form, wealth, fame, food, sleep. there's 4 supports: feeling; observation; joy; happiness; one-pointed mind.
2)¶þìø /ʥĬȻ¶¨ second jhana/holy silence stillness - having found out that there's still feeling and observation, one begin to sever both feeling and observation. no more discrimination of speech. one sever sight, sound, body consciousness, leaving only the mind consciousness. there's 4 supports: inner peace; joy; happiness; one-pointed mind.
3)Èýìø third jhana - when the mind become more still, one felt another form of happiness. of all the happiness felt, this is the most blissful. there's 4 supports: detachment; mindful; wisdom; happiness; settled mind.
4)ËÄìø fouth jhana - felt that the happiness is suffering too, hence wish to sever it. the mind is further stilled. one developed spiritual powers naturally, but it's different from the power of ghosts. there's 4 supports: neither suffering nor happy; detachment; purity of mind; one-pointed mind.
1)¿ÕÎޱߴ¦¶¨ stillness of Infinite Space - felt that one need to sever even form thinking and form object. form thinking is due to sight. form object is due to smell, taste, touch, sound. there's this thinking of boundless voidness, without phenomona or desire. but that does not mean the mind is useless, there's still the 4 aggregates of sensation, cognition, habits and consciousness.
2)ʶÎޱߴ¦¶¨ stillness of Infinitude of Consciousness - felt that the cognition of voidness is also not at peace. so in order to sever that thinking, one maintain a knowing of the thought. make one knew the boundless thoughts of the past and future. but in actual fact there's still congnition. stillness of Infinite Space is done on intentionally, while stillness of Infinitude of Consciousness is rejection of the thought.
3)ÎÞËùÓ´¦¶¨ stillness of Nothingness - there's still this affliction of the cognition doing suppressing of cognitions. hence one thought there's a realm where there's nothingness, where there's more peaceful and blissful. tried to rid all cognitions. but in fact there are still very fine cognition. there are no discrimination of all things, but just the discrimination/attachment of nothingness.
4)·Çë·Ç·Çë´¦¶¨ stillness of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception - one still thinks that the cognition is very rough. one do not want all of them nor not all of them. as stillness of Infinite Space is cognition of voidness. stillness of Infinitude of Consciousness is conscious of cognition. stillness of Nothingness is no cognition, but is in fact very fine cognition. one want to enter Neither Perception nor Non-Perception. in stillness of Nothingness, there still stillness. but in Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, there's not even 'stillness'. but the 6th consciousness are still working, which one do not know. moreover, there are the 7th and 8th consciousness at work. the hinayana thought there's just the 6th consciousness. the mahayana knew that the 6th consciousness is attached to the 8th consciousness, hence known as the 7th consciousness.
Ã𾡶¨ extinguish stillness - one realised that the cognition are due to the 7th consciousness' attachment to 8th consciousness as a 'self'. so in order to reach extinguish stillness, one stops the 7th consciousness/mana, sever the attachment of self. only the third stage arahat reaches this state. but when they are out of their meditative state, they went back to self attachment again. only fouth stage arahat severed the self attachment permanently. as for bodhisattva can achieve extinguish stillness depend, some say yes, some say no. the mind-only school thinks that when bodhisattva reached extinguish stillness, they would have no rebirth in samsara, hence not able to practice bodhisattva path.
