It is not that Kalu Rinpoche who is a highly attained meditation master couldnt answer his call for debate, but because the Zen culture and 'dharma combat' method is so alien to Tibetan Buddhism that Kalu Rinpoche didn't quite understand what Master Seung Sahn is actually challenging him to the zen style of 'dharma combat'. Tibetan way of debating is probably very different.Originally posted by paperflower:interesting....
but sorry i'm not that deep i couldn't catch any joke hahaaa....

hhmmm.... how about the other way around..... or both couldn't get each other?

zen with its basis on not falling to second thoughts ,emphasizing the understanding and not label any forms as it is
As I read Master Seung Sahn teaching from his is all about understanding this "not knowing" mind
While Kalu rinpoche on the other hand ,the tibetan view of looking at things is
"knowing" it is ,and dun bother to empty the mind please !!
It is the mind that give rise to Great Wisdom that leads to Enlightenment
Either side ...have their essence of the Buddha's teaching![]()

its just like brown rice or japanese pearl rice ,both will give the taste of rice
Enlightenment takes many form
All traditions 'View' is founded in the ultimate truth which is Emptiness, but the way of debating it is quite different.Originally posted by bohiruci:well ,its actually quite deep to explain the story ,

no ,paperflower , you are rightOriginally posted by paperflower:thanks for sharing, i think i better be silent.
by the way hor, i feel people here can maybe be less up-tight.
learning should be fun. everytime serious becomes so dull and also not having any label when it is just as it is, is like denying the existent. sorry i am being myself don't hide or act or pretend. i may not be familar with zen teaching but if sticking to a teaching so vigourously is not actually freeing the mind at all, however i respect all tradition of teachings. there is gem in every one of them i won't wanna miss as well.
ciao....
Buddhism is not a regimental religion .. there isnt an ill intention involvedOriginally posted by striketoto:Excuse me, if this is a real life encounter,
I wonder why as a high monk, the korean monk want to do combat and 'quarrel' with another buddhist disciple.
If this is true encounter, I must say the Tibetan Lama had a very calm mind.
The monks don't quarrel', they debate. And (healthy) debates do occur in all traditions. In fact Debating is routinely practised among novice monks in Tibetan monasteries. Nothing wrong at all.Originally posted by striketoto:Excuse me, if this is a real life encounter,
