Social-Ecological Message
It is noted that Mumble's adventure abroad illustrates the film's environmental theme as he discovers that the fish shortage is caused by humans polluting and overfishing in the local waters, which is having a serious impact on the marine ecosystem. Only when Mumble finds a way to communicate with the humans with his dancing does he make the humans realize the environmental consequences and take a more restrained approach.
Some also see the film as having an atheist/freethinking, or at least anti-clerical, philosophy. To support this interpretation, it is pointed out that the Elders, who seem to be a religious elite, insist upon rejecting change, and that faithfully believing in their god, "The Great Guin" is the only means of salvation in this times of hardship.
