If you feel guilty you might consider becoming vegetarian... or if you can't become vegetarian instantly, do it gradually. My master recommend people to take vegetarian breakfast. But if you can, it will be best you just become a vegetarian straight away.Originally posted by marcteng:anyone here feeling guilty eating prawns, crabs, meat, sharkfins, abalone and so forth?
any bad kamma from eating these delicacies? i admit i like eating prawns, crabs and shark fins, but at the same time, feel guilty

(1) That he did not slaughter the animal personally
(2) That he did not instruct others to slaughter
(3) That the slaughter was not committed for his sake
(4) That he did not witness the slaughter
(5) That he did not hear the cries associated with the slaughter
thats kinda gross, for the animals to bleed to death for us humans to consume themOriginally posted by norm:I just could not accept seeing people eating turtle soup. The way the turtle is beheaded, very cruel. In China, they even eat cute terrapins, and tortoise. Downright cruel and bad karma, as these creatures have very long life.
I have also seen the suffering that sheep and lamb go through after they are knifed in the throat to bleed to death, for humans to eat their meat. Very sad.
Initially, it is a bit hard to get used to being vegetarian. But after you turn vegetarian for 3 months, you will lose craving for meat. Eating meat is just a habit. Human's teeth show that they were meant to be vegetarians, not carnivores.
If our diet consist of eating animal meats like lamb, sheep, chicken, cow, pig, then our body's own human meat and flesh will be made up of protein from these animals. Thats why some people have body odour that smell like lamb, sheep, cow odour. Thats because their own human flesh is made up of these animal meats.Originally posted by norm:I just could not accept seeing people eating turtle soup. The way the turtle is beheaded, very cruel. After I turn vegetarian, I feel more "clean". Because my flesh is no longer made up of animal flesh.Originally posted by norm:If our diet consist of eating animal meats like lamb, sheep, chicken, cow, pig, then our body's own human meat and flesh will be made up of protein from these animals. If we just eat vegetables, then the protein that make up our human body flesh will be non animal meat in nature. It will be more pure, less body odour.
Surangama Sutra (Mahayana)
In the Chapter entitled "The enlightenment of others" and the section Prohibition against Killing, page 154. The Buddha said:
"If a man can (control) his body and mind and thereby refrains from eating animal flesh and wearing animal products, I say he will really be liberated."
Also from the Surangama Sutra:
"The reason for practicing dhyana and seeking to attain Samadhi is to escape from the suffering of life, but in seeking to escape from the suffering ourselves why should we inflict it upon others? Unless you can so control your minds that even the thought of brutal unkindness and killing is abhorrent, you will never be able to escape from the bondage of the worldÂ’s lifeÂ…After my Parinirvana in the last kalpa different kinds of ghosts will be encountered everywhere deceiving people and teaching them that they can eat meat and still attain enlightenmentÂ… How can a bhikshu, who hopes to become a deliverer of others, himself be living on the flesh of other sentient beings?"
Brahmajala Sutra, (What the Teaching is Not), from the Pali Canon; "Long Discourses of the Buddha", Sutta 1: Translation by Maurice Walshe pages 69 and 70.
"Whereas some ascetics and Brahmins, feeding on the food of the faithful, remain addicted to the enjoyment of stored-up goods such as food, drink, clothing, carriages, beds, perfumes and meat, the ascetic Gotama refrains from such enjoyment."
Lankavatara Sutra (Mahayana) translated from Sanskrit by D. T. Suzuki. This Sutra was a discussion of the fundamental concepts of Mahayana Buddhism. Chapter Eight is entirely devoted to the prohibition of meat eating.
"The Blessed One said this to him: For innumerable reasons, Mahamati, the Boddhisattva, whose nature is compassion, is not to eat any meat."
"Now, Mahamati, the food I have permitted (my disciples to take) is gratifying to all wise people but is avoided by the unwise; it is productive of many merits, it keeps away many evils; and it has been prescribed by the ancient Rishis. It comprises rice, barley, wheat, kidney beans, beans, lentils, etc., clarified butter, oil, honey, molasses, treacle, sugar cane, coarse sugar, etc.; food prepared with these is proper food."
"If, Mahamati, meat is not eaten by anybody for any reason, there will be no destroyer of life. Mahamati, in the majority of cases the slaughtering of innocent living beings is done for pride and very rarely for other causes."
"It is not true, Mahamati, that meat is proper food and permissible for the Sravaka ( a hearer, hence a pupil or beginner) when (the victim) was not killed by himself, when he did not order others to kill it. When it was not specially meant for him."
Scripture of BrahmaÂ’s Net translated from the Chinese by Rev. Hubert Nearman with Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett and Rev. Daizui MacPhillamy as consultants and editors. Page 138.
Third Less Grave Precept:
On eating meat.
"Disciples of the Buddha, should you willingly and knowingly eat flesh, you defile yourself by acting contrary to this less grave Precept. Pray, let us not eat any flesh or meat whatsoever coming from living beings."
Actually the beef thing is not from Buddhism or Buddha...Originally posted by 798:i read somewhere dat eating beef is very sinful, n buddhists should awoid it at all costs.
any reasons for it?
The custom of not eating beef is linked with Hinduism and Chinese folks culture. Because they do not forget the hard work that cows have helped in their agriculture. And also, the Hindus treat cows as holy animals. If want to be vegetarian, don't eat any meat, not just don't eat beef!
Actually Buddha did not particularly single out beef as not to be eaten. However, those who choose to eat meat should eat meat under only three conditions:
did not see the killing, did not hear the killing, and do not suspect that they were killed.
In this way, the meat is karmically purer.
Thats because cows are known to cry buckets of tears as they line up to be slaughtered. They can't talk human language to ask for mercy, so they can only cry.Originally posted by 798:i read somewhere dat eating beef is very sinful, n buddhists should awoid it at all costs.

I find that my shit, fart & sweat become less smelly after I turn vegetarian.Originally posted by norm:Thats because cows are known to cry buckets of tears as they line up to be slaughtered. They can't talk human language to ask for mercy, so they can only cry.
Last week newspapers feature a chinese restaurant release a huge turtle after it shed tears just before slaughter.
I started going vegetarian recently. Initially, it was very very difficult due to my craving for meats. I loved to eat meats. I had to give up my fav chicken rice, and eat "vegetarian chicken rice".
Then, after several weeks of not eating meat, I started eating chicken, beef. I could instantly experience a taste of blood in my mouth when I chew the meats. If u eat meats very often, your tastebuds get immune to the taste of blood & you will not feel the taste of blood in your mouth when u eat meats.
This is very true (even though I am not vegetarian I heard from others)... my mom and my dharma teacher and a lot a lot of other vegetarians made the same statement and observationOriginally posted by norm:I find that my shit, fart & sweat become less smelly after I turn vegetarian.
Of course it's bad. It's high in cholesterol, causes Hep A, B and C, high blood pressures.Originally posted by marcteng:anyone here feeling guilty eating prawns, crabs, meat, sharkfins, abalone and so forth?

Ya we should not just see them as 'delicacies' or 'food'Originally posted by Eric Cartman:are you guilty about the cost of those delicacies or are you guilty about their lives? if you are guilty about their lives then why do you mention delicacy?

Because food is food. If it's food to your friends, then they will enjoy the preparation of it. They understand that the preparation as well the consumption of the food is part and parcel of living.Originally posted by Isis:EHHHHHHH...
