Also it might be a good idea that on 7th month (Ullambana Dharma) we inform the spirits in the house, join some Pujas, offer to Sangha, and dedicate the merits to the spirits. -
haha.. Great compassion chanting soothe mind of both humans and ghosts. I'm not saying repel ghosts as if we should be discriminative towards them but rather, as a normal human being who are not highly enlightened.. we do not know what to do to really help the ghosts. Come'on , will you be fearful when you saw a malay vampire ? I personally don't know what to do that why i will ask the help from Bodhisattvas. And hope the Bodhisattvas will help both of us which i believe the Bodhisattvas will. The best thing is to ask a venerable for advice when such things happen and cannot be solved. We could do our parts in dedicating merits and cultivate the path of Bodhisattvas to help other sentient beings to liberate from suffering. By practising and keeping the precepts will definitely gain some protection from dharma protectors.
I could put the picture of buddha in my ex-house which is vacant. The purpose is to prevent ghosts from residing in my house. Personal preferences, so it is considered morally wrong?... lol.. moral values are rather subjective. This does not mean, i'm against these ghosts lah.
And human beings for his ignorance do not understand the becoming of these ghosts or sentients beings whom are suffering in the lower three realms. As a buddhist, we are encouraged to be compassionate and practising loving kindness, sympathetic joy to all sentients beings.
But u did raise a good point.. people commonly erect statue of bodhisattva or buying amulet for protection to ward off evil.. has no ideal the suffering of these beings. As buddha has said, all of us have countless birth cycle. There is a high possibility that we had been a ghost, trapping in the state in our pastlifes. -

Not true.... by taking 5 precepts doesn't stop those sentient beings from coming near you. Mm what is the intention of the person taking the 5 precepts ?
Protection is a one of the value-added item that come along with it.
When you sow good seeds, you will reap good harvests.
The purpose should be for cultivating sake. -

has anyone heard of "xin1 li3 you3 gui3"? its there in the mind & heart if one thinks its there. ghost? like ghost as in ghost or just another kind of being one see it different from oneself? there are all kinds of beings around which by infinite karmic affinities, some can experience, hear or even see them. it would be helpful & clearer if one could elaborate more on what kinda ghost one has encountered, we don't always know by finger tips what they actually want from us in general. taking the 5 precepts but unable to practice mindfulness, there will always be ghosts around "you". it's not buying a product & exchanging for protection from dharma protectors when one can't even help oneself before helping others. dharma protectors are not body guards. it is one's mind one needs to learn how to protect. i'm not sure what specific or special steps are there to follow that needs to be carried out when there are ghosts in the house. what i did was just what i ought to learn & practice - recognise the fears, know how & when fears surfaced and see through it, extend compassion & kindness to them no matter what others think of me as silly or crazy or "are you out of your mind?" thingy. when i assist others in any possible ways i could do, i'm also assisting myself. those steps which i don't see any steps at all. sorry if its too crude to be understood. ghosts are actually your own fears, confusions & distortions of reality as they ought to be just as they are.
i listen to heart sutra, diamond sutra, great compassion mantra, karma avoiding mantra almost at least once a day & i know that there are countless unseen & seen beings alike around which i'd opt not to speculate who/what they are. i don't wait for things to happen then take my steps. -
the best is to arm oneself , is to spread metta or chant metta sutra to those seen and unseen living beings

Actually ghosts are everywhere, the number are so much more than humans, I am not surprised if there is one next to me right now. lol
most of them are not harmful unless when provoked.
If you happen to do chanting at that time, just invite them to do it together or share your merit with them, they will be very grateful of you.

By their nature. That's like asking how come birds got bad karma and yet can still fly? They are just born with that potential to fly. Actually only certain types of ghosts got more powers (See 36 ghosts link). ya, the point is if you have done nothing wrong, you should not be afraid cos most are harmless. thats what i always believe.

Not all 'ghosts' from the dead of human. Some are spirits of various domains and tertiaries.
If you attended some Dharma event, you'll notice the offering to Naga and a small offering left outside the hall or place of assembly.
Vajrayana has protective recitation that are very forceful towards all (Dharma) disturbing activities, similarly in Mahayana and Theravada. These are not aim at 'spirits of deceased human'.
Most Ven. Jing Kong in one of his teaching session mentioned he encounter various disturbing 'activities' while he was in Korea.
The logic is, human does not has the ability to break through the Bardo or 中阴身 unless, while alive, this person has some form of practices that makes him aware or having a strong bond with protecting deities (can be of good or bad) that carries him to live in another dimension (for a certain period only).
Accordingly, whenever after you did chanting (in any tradition), you should dim your room light (not the shrine light) and leave some food offering for any visiting 'friends'. They are drawn by your chanting or the Dharma that is recited. If they found delight, they will actually stay and becomes protecting deities - for the Dharma activities. That is one reason why Vajrayana did not allow non-filled Buddha statues.
That's why if you have a dedicated chanting room or chanting area, you find it to be most peaceful for reflection and meditation. -
Hi all
My personal experience
My current flat was haunted when I first moved in. That haunting occured for 4-5 years. There are times I feel being watched, followed. I can hear people breathing and sometimes talking. The more significant events includes creeping onto my bed at night and sayang me. Once, my bedroom turned freezingly cold to the point I can hear my teeth chattering (Mind you, no air con in place and not raining). Also my cat start to behave strangely
All these stopped after I embrace Buddhism. But once in a while, still can feel it coming.

I'm goin to over my fren's hostel to do metta meditation now since she has complained feeling disturbed by some entity....

Yes should be ok lah. Ask your friend to do with you as well.. thats quite impt. If still persist maybe need to get more help. Is your friend a Buddhist? My friend left the di zhang jing on and the "radio which broadcast the sutra" has fused today. becos based on what u said ,the spirit is more than a just a normal spirit .It could be woeful and vengeful .
It best to get rinpoche to help you
Last time my friend also have a even more severe ghost vengeful in his house
and I went to see a rinpoche

Do not think your are strong in a certain meditation ,your can help them .
Becos your not clear about the spirit intention.
Some stay in the house out for malice .and the only way is to "subdue" them and tame them to Buddhadharma
I myself dare not exorcise or visit haunted spirit ,becos i know my practice is not to that level to allow the spirit to have great respect.
Its best your friend seek Rinpoche help or Buddhist monk who is well-versed in Paritta(Theravada verse of chanting for protection and alleviation of suffering of spirits)
or Mahayana monks or nuns to help you
A serious warning to all . Do not try to exorcise or tame any spirit ,becos you may be injured when they strike back ,especially with Poltergeist -
yeah i think my friend is moving out... after that headache incident. My friend said she can feel alot of "anger" directed into her. Don't know whether if there is psychological ?
Prior to this incident, my friend has dedicated merits to the ghost.
As a practising buddhist, we should also want the ghost out of its suffering realm soon.
