KONG HIAP MEMORIAL MUSEUM
The museum, located at 8 Geylang East Avenue 1, was built by the Singapore Budddhist Lodge to house the precious art collections left behind by the late Venerable Kong Hiap. It was officially inaugurated by H.E. President S R Nathan on March 4 at 11.00 am.
The late Venerable Kong Hiap (1901-1994) was one of the pioneers of Buddhist education in Singapore. He founded the Mee Toh School in the 1950s and made significant contributions to charity and Buddhist culture. His source of inspiration to be actively involved in education, charity and culture came from his long association with his teacher, the legendary, multi-talented, ascetic monk, Venerable Master Hong Yi, as well as such accomplished and renowned arts and literary figures as Feng Zikai, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Ma Yifo, Ye Shengtao, Yu Dafu and many others. Despite his high standing in the Buddhist community, he was always humble and thrifty and observed the precepts strictly.
The museum in memory of the late Venerable was converted from his private residence at a cost of around $1 million. It is managed by a voluntary committee under the advice of Tan Swie Hian, a multi-faceted artist of international acclaim. -

KYCL held a dinner on March 4 at Singapore Foochow Association to raise funds for its new Zen centre to be built at 21, Geylang Lorong 25 to accommodate the growing number of its participants and activities. KYCL has been organizing a myriad of Zen activities since its early days on Pulau Ubin fifteen years ago. -

This retreat focuses soley on the recitation of the mantra OM MANI PADME HUNG. Verbal recitation is encouraged as to develop within the individual the deepest qualities of mindfulness, compassion and peace through the blessings of Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) and a pure mind. The merit accumulated will be delicated towards Well-being of World Peace, World Economy & World Heatlh.
The retreat last about 7 days -
Buddhist symphony debuts in Singapore

Singapore -- A Buddhist Symphony Orchestra from China has held its first overseas concert in Singapore
The concert of "Chinese Harmonious Music" uses western and traditional instruments to interpret Buddhist music. The 190 members, musicians and choir members, are mainly from the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.
The conductor defined the concert as a symbol of harmony that combines traditional Chinese Buddhism and western styles.
A member of the audience said the concert is a good form to explain Buddhism and called it truly moving.
The Buddhist Symphony Orchestra debuted in Shanghai last month. -

Patna's Buddha idols being sent to Singapore for an exhibition

Patna, India -- Some selected idols of Lord Buddha dating back to the 8th century AD are being sent from the Patna Museum to Singapore for an international exhibition.
Sixteen idols of Lord Buddha are to be displayed at the Ancient Civilisation Museum for an exhibition on "Buddhist Philosophy and Buddhist Art", in October this year, said Sahdev Kumar, the museum's director.
"The idols are primarily from Nalanda and Kurkihar and they hold utmost importance, as Lord Buddha spent most of his time there only," he added.
Amidst all the excitement, the safe transport of these idols is a cause ofoncern to the authorities. The State administration has taken care to ensure the safe return of the idols.
"All these idols are invaluable," said Janardan Singh Sigriwal, Bihar'sulture and Youth Affairs Minister.
The event has excited locals and visitors, who see this as an opportunity for their State to make a mark on the international Buddhist circuit.
"I am delighted to know that these idols are being sent for an international exhibition in Singapore. It is a good thing," said Prabhat Sharma, a visitor.
The idols were found during an excavation at Nalanda and Kurkihar.
Buddhism is an important religion in Singapore with almost 61 percent of its nationals following it.
These idols were sculpted during the Pala Dynasty. The bronze figurines depicting Buddha in various postures were selected by representatives of Singapore Museum. -

MAHABODHI MONASTERY
Memorial Puja
In commemorating the 10th anniversary of the demise of the late Master Songnian (1911-1997), the monastery held a memorial puja on Aug 26 at 11 am with Venerable Long Gen leading the participants in the recitation of Amitabha Sutra. In conjunction, an exhibition of the late MasterÂ’s artworks also took place. The late Master was remembered not only for his artistic accomplishments but also for his active role in raising funds for the community.

Formed on 28 May 2007, IABU is an international forum for institutions of Buddhist higher education. It provide opportunities for them to network, understand and benefit from the richness and variety of the multinational Buddhist traditions. It will function mainly through its Executive Council and an International Secretariat, to be based at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Bangkok. In the near future, IABU expects to develop a variety of collaborative efforts, such as mutual recognition of each others?qualifications as well as exchanges in administration, teaching, research and outreach programmes. BUDDHA DHAMMA MANDALA SOCIETY
Teaching Programme
Dr Somaratne is currently teaching at BDMS till Oct 26. He delivers a series of talks on early Buddhist teachings every Sunday morning at 10 am. He is also conducting a Pali language course for beginners every Tuesday at 7.30 pm and a Sutta study course every Friday at 7.30 pm. Dr. Somaratne holds a Ph.D. Degree from Northwestern University, U.S.A. and is teaching and doing researches on Buddhism.
CITY DHARMA
Initiated by a group of NUS Buddhist Society Alumni, this programme aims to reach out to and interest SMU students in Buddhism. So far, a few sharing sessions relating to Buddhism have been conducted by professionals in their specialised fields. Honestly, when I was in sec sch, we just skimmed through and nothing much was learnt.
What was presented is also very limited and the ignorance of Buddhism continues to persist. -
