Synopses :In this very personal episode of Light at the Edge of the World, Wade goes on a spiritual trek through the Himalayas of Nepal, looking at Buddhism as a science of the mind while also trying to decide if Buddhism is a spiritual path heÂ’d like to take himself.
The journey begins at the Thuptencholing Monastery, the home of the aged Trulshig Rinpoche, one of the teachers of the Dalai Lama. The Rinpoche takes Wade back to where he first achieved enlightenment, high atop a mountain, a place called Sengye Phuk, “The Lion’s Cave.” Here he teaches Wade about the four noble truths of Buddhism. Then Trulshig Rinpoche presides over the Mani Rimdu festival, a vibrant ceremony of compassion at the Chiwong Monastery.
Wade then meets up with Matthieu Ricard, a former promising scientist in France who became a monk after he found that science was telling the how about life as a human being, but not the why.
Matthieu and Wade trek to the Solu Khumbu region of the Himalayas, under the shadow of Everest, to have a rare audience with a nun who has been in meditative retreat for 45 years. She has never been filmed before—never even had her picture taken. But she appears before our cameras to give her message of compassion to the world.
Some background on Trulshik Rinpoche:
Venerable Trulshik Rinpoche
One of the greatest living masters of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, Trulshik Rinpoche is a leading proponent of the Rime, or non-sectarian, spirit of Buddhism. One of Lama Zopa Rinpoche's gurus, he lives in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal, which is also Lama Zopa Rinpoche's birthplace.
Trulshik Rinpoche was the closest and most realized disciple of the late master, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. It was prophesied in Khyentse Rinpoche's visionary teachings (terma) that Trulshik Rinpoche would be the spiritual heir to his teachings, and in his absence, Khyentse Rinpoche referred all important matters to Trulshik Rinpoche. Upon Khyentse Rinpoche's passing in 1991, Trulshik Rinpoche was entrusted to find his reincarnation. He has visited the West several times to give teachings to fortunate students.
