Just where is Buddhist Hell ?

Hell is not to scare people or initimidate people for not adhering to Buddha's teaching .It is simply a place where one pay back one evil deed in saha world
I cant remember who is the guy ,but it is stated in a story , a young man in ancient china ,went down to hell to see .He was questioning to the Judge why punishment is so cruel to the hell beings .when the Judge show him ,He realised its a mistake .Punishment in hell is figment of ones hallucination of own fruition of one eight consciousness deeds ..there is actually no beings punish .
He thus cant see any beings taking punishment
According to the Jataka tales ,one of the birth of Buddha is in hell.He was punished by carrying a pot of hot liquid on his head ,constantly scalded as the liquid dripping onto him ,as a result of giving His mother a kick aside to board a boat when He is bound on a business trip. When He saw fellow beings sufferings, He contemplated ,"May I share the suffering of all hell beings who are suffering the same punishment as me and remove the suffering of others .Instantly, with this noble thoughts ,He was expiated from his sufferings and die immediately to reborn in the Heaven .
Thats the beginning of Lojong practice in Tibetan Buddhism
According to scriptures , a block of wood 1 "zhang" [probably 3metre] fell into the burning hell, within 1 minutes turn to ashes
there in a abode in the most darkest corner ,a light shine upon the hell beings , if they remembered and repent at the minute of thoughts abt their misdeeds
Ksheetigarbha Bodhisattva is always there to remind them to remember to undo the misdeed in their saha life before reborn as human once their punishment in hell exhausted

I personally feel that taboos in chinese society must be demystified ,like mentioning of Hell to many people -
the first level of hell just 26,000 km from the ground level of earth
is the Hell of Extreme Moaning .This is the Hell where beings are punished due to their minor acts of selfishness ,stingy and ego-centred behaviour
then the next level deeper ,is the Cold Hell where one experience Winter condition .this Hell contains the beings suffering from Wanton psychotic behaviour ,Wanton sexual misconduct and Great evil like embezzlement of state funds
then to the 8 Hot Hell
and eventually to Avici Hell , place for those who does burn ,slander Holy teachings , incite killings of Monk and nun, destroy harmony in the Sangha
and deeper ,is the Hell where People who violated the Samaya vows , announcing Supernatural powers and villify the Teachings
thus in chinese ,akin to the Infernal Affairs by Leung and Andy Lau Movie slogan ,The non-interval Hell ,the Most feared Place in Hell , where ones suffering will continue for many cycle after the karmic energy is exhausted
which in the worst case is 60 000 000 years in human lifespan

There are alot a lot of beings who created very heavy negative karma and fall into the ghost realm first, suffer for a very very long time many thousands of years or more, but it doesn't end there. He has only tasted the 'flower karma' effects, according to the Sutras. After that, he will pass away from the ghost realm and then he enter into hell, that's the 'fruit karma'. Some people after coming out of hell, will still have to be reborn in the animal realm for many many lifetimes, and even when he has the opportunity to reborn as a human, he still has to suffer being a deformed child or die at a very very young age, cos there is still some karma remaining. Then when he has fully 'recovered' he still might not be able to hear the dharma for a very very long time. This is what the Buddha taught.
Anyway all sentient beings whether human or non-human are bound by karma, it's not only humans who are affected. -

Not exactly 'pay back' as in retribution, but is just a ripening of karmic fruition. -

Its from the book 'Be a Lamp Upon Yourself' that I "borrowed" from outside one of the shops in Bedok Reservoir Road.
Here is the excerpt from the book (p.124):
WHAT IS THE REALM OF HELL?
Hell is a horible dimension of intense constant pain and torment where its beings are subjected to the most excruciating tortures inflicted by vengeful demons and beasts. The firey heat of the hot Hells corresponds to the passionate intensity of hatred and fear while the freezing coldness of the cold hells corresponds to the cold cruelty of hard heartedness and apathy. Hell consists of subplanes, each of which "specialises" in a particular kind of karmic punishment appropriate to a certain kind of unwholesome action. Beings in Hell either burn with rage or are tortured by anxiety. They do not see that their torturers are manifestations of their own guilty Minds. The duratiion of life in Hell also feels unberably long.
HELL IN OUR WORLD
A World War can be the eqivalent of Hell where violence, hatred and fear is every where. Being forced to face strong personal phobias such as flying in a plane or entering an unkown place can also be hellish experiences.
AM I A HELL-BEING?
The "Human Hell Being" live life habitually seeing the world full of dangerous strangers out to get even or take advantage - everyone seems to be constantly threatening. Their prime moltivation is to eliminate or evade their menaces, and are in a state of open emnity with everyone they encounter. They suffer agonies of insecurity and feel the pain and humilation of imagined wrongs. Because of how they behave towards others, they bring into being the enemies they imagine. Hell Beings are dominated by the mental state of Hatred (Aversion), fear and/or even voilence. They live in Hell in the world as they make every situation a place of torment for themselves. If one is to die tuned to this mindstate, one is likely to be reborn in Hell.
Hell is also right here.
