SEOUL, South Korea: South Korea's defense minister thanked the top U.S. general for America's help in achieving the recent release of two South Korean hostages in Afghanistan, a news report said Thursday.
Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo made the comments to visiting Gen. Peter Pace, outgoing chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Yonhap news agency said, citing an unnamed ministry official. It did not say how the U.S. had helped in the release

Taliban Says Korean Hostage Talks Fail
KABUL, August 18, 2007 -- Taliban militants in Afghanistan say they are deciding the fate of 19 South Korean hostages after talks for their release failed today.
The militants, who seized 23 Koreans from a bus in Ghazni Province in July, have since released two female hostages and killed two male hostages.
They have threatened to kill the remaining captives if their demand for insurgent prisoners to be freed from jail is not met.

Taliban to resume talks over South Korean hostages

Afghanistan's Taliban have insisted that they would resume direct talks over 19 South Korean hostages, but only if their demands - chiefly the release of some of their prisoners - are met.
The hardline militant group said telephone contacts between the rebels and South Korean negotiators had resumed, despite the apparent breakdown of face-to-face talks.

Afghan police rescued a female German aid worker just hours after she appeared in a video asking her government to secure her release.
Christina Meier, 31, who works for a small Christian aid organization, was dining with her husband at a restaurant in Kabul on Sunday when four armed assailants carried out the bold midday kidnapping. Unlike the Taliban militants who are currently holding captive 19 South Korean aid volunteers in Afghanistan, the “criminal gang” behind the latest abduction was reportedly motivated by money.

The Taliban said it was losing patience with South Korea officials who have been negotiating for the release of 19 remaining Korean hostages.
“The Korean delegation is telling us again and again that they are discussing the issue with the Afghan government and the U.S. authorities,” said purported Taliban spokesman Zabeehullah Mujahid to The Korea Times on Monday.
But the kidnappers contend that “the Korean side did no[t] seem to be serious about saving the lives of their people” because it was not doing enough to press for an exchange of Taliban prisoners for Korean hostages – the insurgent’s main demand.
For its part, South Korea has made efforts to urge the U.S. and Afghan government to free rebel fighters, such as sending a delegation to Washington to meet with U.S. officials and meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to urge more flexibility.
The Korean delegation has repeatedly explained to Taliban negotiators that it is virtually powerless to release the militant fighters who are held by Afghan and U.S. military.

Lee Ji-young, 36, the Korean hostage in Afghanistan who volunteered to stay behind so another hostage could be freed in her stead. Kim Kyung-ja, 37, and Kim Ji-na, 32, were freed.
If she can volunteer to stay behind, she must be at peace...
Taliban kidnappers at first decided to release Lee when they freed two women earlier this month.
Al Jazeera said Lee Ji-young showed “an astonishing spirit of sacrifice” to give another hostage a chance of freedom. The network quoted the two freed women as saying Lee volunteered to stay behind because she has more experience living in Afghanistan.
Lee had worked as a translator and guide for other Korean volunteers in Afghanistan. “We were very worried when we heard that Ji-young volunteered to be left behind,” Kim Ji-na told Al Jazeera. “But the Taliban allowed Ji-young to write a letter to her family which consoled her and gave her some hope that she would come home soon.”
Lee’s family has now made the letter public. “I am doing fine, so don’t worry about me,” she writes. “Please don’t get sick and be in peace.” The two freed women pleaded with the Taliban to let Lee Ji-young, who was left alone when the two were released, join the remaining 18 hostages. -

Behind The Scene Talks as Doctor Says Hostages Are Well

KABUL _ After recent failed attempts for the release of the remaining 19 hostages, both Taliban kidnappers and Korean officials are now engaged in behind the scene negotiations through middlemen to secure the safe release of the abductees.
Earlier, sources had told this correspondent that the Taliban leadership was angry at the commander for kidnapping the Koreas, especially the women, and keeping them in custody for such a longer period.
Meanwhile, an Afghan doctor on Friday said all the hostages are in good state of health. Dr. Muhammad Hashim Wahaj, who offered medical help to the hostages a fortnight back, told journalists in Kabul he was told by Taliban commander Abdullah Mansoor that they are well.
The Afghan doctor said he and his team was not allowed to meet the hostages, but was told by the commander that they are in good state of health.
