But I understand that there also also Non-Buddhist figures/ascetics among them..? (and also Buddha was against the ascetism practised by many of the brahmanists) And the gods behind the statues are Hindu gods

Also, Buddha practised ascetism with a number of other ascetics on his search for Enlightenment, but found that such practises did not lead to enlightenment, and therefore gave up those practices.
Instead, he found that the middle way beyond the extremes of sensual indulgence and ascetism is the right way to Enlightenment. -
Anyway this is a generalisation, I do not mean all 'Lersi' are non-Buddhist. Because the term 'hermit' is very vague, I don't know what is it refering to. It seems to encompass both Buddhist and Brahmanistic practitioners, therefore very mixed up.
The article says Essentially Phra Lersi are Indian hermits who are credited as founders and patron saints of various professions such as doctors, religious tattooists, white magic practitioners, herbalists and many others.

Buddha learn higher level of mediation from Lersi but it still wasn't enough for him.
So Lersi we respect also cause its Buddha's teachers. -
