Why Ghosts are scary

who wanna explained why ghosts are scary, since they are in woeful state of existence eh?
why usually ghost wear white long dress one? is it their dressing? -
general public perspective of ghost.

i'm not sure if buddhists believe in ghosts.

Humans fear ghosts because, like all unknown phenomena, they invoke fear. Buddhists do not fear ghosts, they feel compassionate towards ghosts (and all other beings for that matter) -

It is human nature to fear the unknown, but like Beyond Religion said, instead of having a superstitious mindset and fearing ghosts, we should generate compassion for those beings instead. When there is a mind of compassion, how can there be fear?? We must all practice compassion. -
i feel it stems down to our conceptual thinking and labelling things we come in contact with. fear of the unknown is an illusion of the future and also the person seems to be expecting something and things may not always turn out what one expects or thinks. fearing ghost or finding them scary is a brainwashed idea being input since young by hearing, watching horror stories and influenced by culture and social interaction. imagine a scenario, a child has never been taught the idea of what's scary or ugly or fearful, do you think he/she would know if ghosts are scary? besides, experiencing certain events that triggered a person could also make him/her grow up mentally with the unpleasant impression. i feel such thing is very emotional to the mind and whether ignorance of any degree, it takes alot of patience, practice, perseverance to overcome. i think overcome is still not the correct term but i can't think of a better word. yeah when mind is free of ideas and expectation, genuine compassion is all there is.

Ghosts are quite pitiful beings and not all are out to harm people. -
We feel that ghost are scary because we are too protective of ourselves, so when we see ghost or anyone of the same level meaning those with more hatred & greed, we will naturally feel being harmed.
That's why the closer they physically come near to us the more scary we will feel.
To overcome this fear, we either let go of our attachment, so we don't have anything to be harmed.
or develop compassion towards them, so even with the feeling of being harmed, we won't worry because we know that the ghost is actually our past parents that love us so much and probably make bad karma because of us. So even if we are harmed by them, if it benefit them,we don't mind. But of course, once you develop compassion with them, they will feel that and automatically leave you or even help you.
One thing I don't understand is why some ghosts are afraid of human, not those human that has got the power, but the common people. -

I have seen/felt/heard ghosts before...does buddhism believe in "luck"?, and does being "down on one's luck" causes one to see/hear ghosts?

But yes they are very pitiful to be in there realm. If you think for them compassionately, suddenly ghosts are not that terrifying anymore. -

No, Buddhism does not believe in luck. We believe in causes and conditions and all happenings are due to the aggregation of causes and conditions... like Isis said, it could be due to a karmic cause.. or it can be others.
Sometimes a person's mind who is without brightness can easily see these things... it is advisable to chant the Buddha's name often for such a person which will then increase his 'mental brightness' and thus be able to stop seeing them. -
Those vengeful spirits ( something like they want to haunt the person who caused them misery eg. murder them blah blah ) is more scary. Their main motive is like to scare the people and take revenge ?
So there should be those "good' ghosts that haven't been reincarnated only. I always believe that if you don't disturb them, they won't disturb you. -
What kind of ghosts have you seen? Personally.
Don't count the artistic representations of other people's account of apparitions.
They are scary.

I had since stopped hearing/seeing them after I placed an image of Green Tara on my table..until recently..when the thing knocked on my room door and tried to open it.

I will recommend not to do it, even though they are pitiful, there were humans once also, they will understand your situation.
But you will still see them when u go out of your house rite

purification with constant mindfulness in practicing the precepts illuminates a person and nothing external nor internal could waver him/her into the realm of spirits. spiritual realm is all part of one, all is just in the mind, a thought apart and such separation do self-create to have all sorts of discrimination and unnecessary fears or judging merely based on presumption. karmic affinity plays a role in contact with anyone (anyone refers to both the seen & unseen). precepts do not just lead one to have a better rebirth, i feel it also purifies one and has a great effect on one's progress in spiritual cultivation.
