If the kmt don't like the owner...they can always leave the statue and run away
Unless the owner know the arts of creating one -
It's no good IMHO to keep spirits. This is because we will be creating a karmic affinity with these lower realm beings. It is no good to create such affinity to the spirit realm.
If one is genuinely compassionate and intends to help the spirits be reborn in higher realms, what we can do is to dedicate our merits through offerings to sangha and pujas, etc, to the liberation of the spirits in their name. -

a spirit is same as human , no one wants to be imprisoned in a dimension like that -

Just to share my opinion.
Had roughly ran through this thread and I have to say I agree with AEN, maggot and bohiruici that it is really not advisable to rear KMT or any sort of spirits, especially if they are from lower realms.
Definitely it can be seen that you have certain kammic affliations with these spirits. It will be good for both you and the kmt that you seek a well-learned venerables to advise you in releasing them and pray for their deliverance.
To my understanding, even in Thailand, there seems to be a few methods in making a KMT into a bucha. However what methods are not that important. The essence is that these spirits are sort of magically bounded to the statue to do the owners' biddnig.
Of course you may not be asking them to do bad things or what now. But sentient beings are interesting being as our minds are ever-changing.
One day you may be that badly offended and back home, you see that you have a spirit to your bidding. Won't you even feel tempted to take the chance?
Best way is to have them chao du or if you're saying your spirits is to gain merits, then send to a proper temple for them to receive the Teachings and offerings there instead of sheltering it in your house. -

And really, we won't know they are genuinely willing parties or not.
Sending to a good temple and venerables for deliverance are not bad ideas too.
I think you will be gaining greater merits by sending them to temple for proper deliverance rituals than keep them at home. -

In the Teochew Shan Tang (very localised Buddhism), where they honour Song Da Feng Zu Shi in the middle of the main shrine, it has Di Zang Wang on His right and Tian Zang Wang on His left.
I asked the temple attendant there and he gave a very chinese reply...
"xiao di (small boy, refering to me), wo men hua ren, you di jiu you tian"
Literally meaning if there is earth, there must be heaven (or sky as in Tian).
Hmm...I have no idea how this Tian Zang Wang originates.

In more doctrinal supported context, you can contrast between Di Zang Wang and Xu Kong Zang. The idea is similar, where the name of DZW itself suggesting the tolerance and fairness to everyone like mother earth, XKZ's idea is that you able to tolerate entire existence. However XKZ has little affinity with the Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism as XKZ is not that well known and popular. Apparently XKZ is more popular and known in Japanese Buddhism. In Chinese Buddhism where Manjusri represents Wisdom, it is so in Japanese Buddhism that XKZ stands for Wisdom. -
