extreme asceticism in India

When I switch on channel 11 National Geographic now from 8 - 9pm, I couldn't believe my eyes when I watch these yogi masters and people practising extreme asceticism, like torturing ur body to attain Nirvana, not cutting his hair since he was a boy, putting his arm aloft for the same position since 1972, his fingers and hand that held aloft has already turned to wood.
Some believe Shiva smoking hash, so they in turn also smoking hash.
some 20 millions of philgrims will bath at river ganges for purification.
some chant the names of the god when they go to river ganges for purification. -
after they bath, they dried and put ashes on their naked bodies
The show finishes, the commentator said with this, all their sins will be washed away and they will go into Nirvana.
Got one female caucasian settled in India for 30 years and followed their tradition

Imagine if bathing at the ganges river will purify our sins , then what abt those fish , crabs , etc even the micro-organisms living there ? Won't they become buddha already ?

India has many religions that centred on either one god or many gods. I once saw a tv programme that its followers in India worship rat god, its temple are infested with alot of rats, and the priest there shared breakfast with the rat. The most disgusting part is the rat urine and excrement are treated as holy water by the followers -
knowing the truth, how would you set these people to see the light?
