Age of conflict

  Five Five-Hundred-Year Periods Five sub-divisions of the three periods following the Buddha's passing significant for many Mahayana adherents:

  1. Age of enlightenment (解脱堅固 Cn: jiÄ›tuÅ� jiÄ�ngù; Jp: gedatsu kengo) 
  2. Age of meditation (禅定堅固 Cn: chándìng jiÄ�ngù; Jp: zenjÅ� kengo)   
     These two ages comprise the Former Day of the Law (正法時期 Cn: zhèngfÇŽ; Jp: shÅ�bÅ�)
  3. Age of reading, reciting, and listening (読誦多è�žå …固 Cn: sòngduÅ�wén jiÄ�ngù; Jp: dokuju tamon kengo)
  4. Age of building temples and stupas (多造塔寺堅固 Cn: duÅ�zào tÇŽsì jiÄ�ngù; Jp: tazÅ� tÅ�ji kengo)
     These two ages comprise the Middle Day of the Law (åƒ�法時期 Cn: xiàngfÇŽ; Jp: zÅ�hÅ�)
  5. Age of conflict (é—˜è«�堅固 Cn: zhÄ“ng jiÄ�ngù; Jp: tÅ�jÅ� kengo), an age characterized by unrest, strife, famine, and other natural and human-made disasters.
     This age corresponds to the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law (末法時期 Cn: mòfÇŽ; Jp: mappÅ�) when the (historical) Buddha's teachings would lose all power of salvation and perish.
