I'm not a buddhist but I wan to ask smth..
wads the significance of the 49th day after death??
got any other days impt need to remember?? like 100 days??
No special significance. Alot of these 'days' practices are Chinese customs rather than from Buddhist teachings.
However we believe in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism we believe that the antarabhava will take rebirth (if he is not yet liberated) in the 6 realms within a period of 49 days, any time in between.
There is the possibility that the individual is too attached and as a result turn into a ghost after 49 days, passing the chance to take rebirth in the other realms...
so how about educating me abit on chinese custom cause i not chinese also..
Hi,
In Japan, memorials are held every 7 days from death until the 49th day, and on the following occassions: the 100th day, 1st Year, 3rd Year, 7th Year, 13th Year, 23rd Year, (25th Year), 27th Year, 33rd Year and 50th Year, and sometimes, every 50 years after the 50th year. Most sects teach that it is the opportunity to dedicate merits to the deceased, but in the tradition i'm in, it is another opportunity to hear the Buddha-Dharma.
