Just recently, my grandfather had a few dreams that a monk told him he has reached the end of his life and soon will be reborn in western pureland. Then just few days ago, he really passed away with many auspicious signs as described in the sutras.
When he still hospitalize he told us that he doesn't feel any pain at all, but just not able to eat anything. Then at the moment that he is about to pass away, he said he see thousands of people coming to welcome him and feels very happy to see them.
When the people there is carrying his body to leave the hospital, one of them who happen to touch his head can feel his head very hot.
During one of the chanting sessions, one of my relatives who can see "things" even saw some kind of light in human form come out from the coffin and merge with amitabha.
Another good thing is we found some relics from his ashes after the cremation.
Come to think of it, death is not really a scary or miserable thing as long as one practice and follow buddha's teaching. Take my grandfather for example, he didn't feel pain, throughout the process, he still conscious and enjoy it.
Through this experience, I won't say my faith on buddha amitabha has further strengthened because I fully believe in it all along.
Anyone else has similar encounter, kindly share.
How does your grandfather practise?

First, he is a buddhist, he heard about buddha amitabha before, and like to do chanting.
He is a very kind person, sometimes to the extent of sacrificing himself to help other people. He very rarely show his emotion.
That's good signs for your grandfather...
I remember the same thing with my grandmother, there were many auspicious signs witnessed by my relatives, one of them even saw Amitabha. There were also some relics from her ashes.

Glad to know that. :)
This is something that all buddhist who practice pureland hope to achieve.
But I think even those who don't practice pureland, the ultimate objectives is still the same.
Hi, understand that what is in our mind at the point of dying will create the cause for our future. But what should we keep in mind - e.g. Buddha image? Mantra?
There are some interesting points in the book "Tibetan Book of dead". It seems like there the chance of reborn into purelands are related to the chonyid bardo.
bardo = ä¸é˜´èº«
The practice is called Phowa in Tibetan Buddhism
