Yes I agree with bohiruci, preparing for the afterlife is of utmost importance. Some masters say that buddhism is abt understanding life and death. In chinese, liao3 sheng1 si3. But there are many meanings to this phrase. One, being, understanding where you come from and where you will be going or reborn to. The next being seeing into impermenance. And the third being ending the cycle of life and death.
However, for those aspiring to be a bodhisattva, one should understand life and death and have no fear of living and dying. In fact, if you take a look at how a bodhisattva practices, he purposely undergoes rebirth after rebirth to help ppl and perfect his paramitas. So how can a bodhisattva be afraid of living, dying and the suffering which comes with it? If you take a look at the big picture, the whole span of your life including all your previous and future rebirths, you'll understand a lot about life and become less attached. It will also become clearer what you have to do now.
