Mahayana Buddhism in Singapore in 2011 and beyond
Mahayana Buddhism ,arrived from China initially from the boats by the Chinese immigrants ,from the 1819s now have become the mainstream of the lower education and billingual Buddhist in Singapore. However ,certain issue need to address to ensure the passing on of tradition and practises in Singapore,an highly competitive and pressure-cooker society.
The Mahayana temple of singapore still mainly focus on Chinese as a medium of instructions .It has become a impasse in the attraction of young people to Buddhism.Buddhist leaders must come together for annual working Seminary to ensure that English Services is available and a comprehensive set of activities being carry out in English Language
With the Advent of Vajrayana Buddhism, an offshoot of Mahayana Buddhism, many young working adult are once drawn to the ornate practises and proven mind-purifications process .
A new direction is proposed by me ,that the new cell groups be set up in various part of the nation to cater to a wide mass of young people and activities should be 20% spiritual and 80% Social Cohesion and Internetworking.
I would urge young people who have a burning aspiration to Answer My call to set up cell groups and Support league in many parts of singapore to Improve the Social responsibility and Cohesiveness of Buddhist community as a whole.I will be willing to provide spiritual and leadership mentorship to all who wish to come forward to Lead
lead in the name of Buddha to Guide others to the shores of Enlightenment
Hello bohiruci! Weychin here! I applaud your aspirations in an uphill task! Would you be kind in indulging those interested with some details? I have six at the moment! 1) Can you tell me more of yourself, your core group and affiliations. Any mission statements? 2)Under what auspices will this movement be launched? Is the movement be a loose and informal aggregates under umbrella of registered society or is it independant. 3) How will the funding come about?
Cont.- 3) With english as the active medium, have programmes in/or putting in place for putting in context and making relevance in current context? 4) What is your position on other traditions(Theravada, Varjayana) in view Chinese Mahayana? How will you promote and ensure harmony 5) Social cohesion, it may be premature, but how do you intend to maintain relevance and identity in a broadbased(communal) within a central/cell group without creating insular enclaves later on, within a context wide range of activities?
6) Chinese Mahayana existed in China in a tripartite of Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. As a result, Buddhism is salvation, Confucianism is moral and social conduct in Imperial China, Taoism in science and medicine. What is the context of Chinese Mahayana in a broader context,eg. East/ West values and Capitalism, and Democracy and others!
