It is true that what I know is hearsay but there are Dharma talks and Buddhist books on this :the spirit will go away if one 掌chant Amitabha.

can also chant the parittas like ratana or metta sutra.
can chant any sutra, such as Mangala sutra for example? is it effective against evil spirit? is chanting Namo Buddhasa enough?
I remember about cyclist drowning at Ubin and they could'nt find the body, the monks from the Buddhist temple at Ubin chanting some paritas or someone the body floated!
The documentary was shown on ch 8 many years ago !

I'm not too sure about that. I know the person being possessed chanting Amitabha is also only a temporary measure because the spirit is afraid of the holy light when the person is chanting. It will be back if the person is not chanting.
Thus, it will be better if the person continue to chant frequently (the person chanting will have permanent 佛光). The best is to get a monk to 超度 the spirit, meaning transferring merits or appease the spirit so that it can be reborn in a better realm. I heard it will be very difficult to get the person who possessed cured if the spirit stayed in that person's body for too long.

if the spirit is his/her enemies in past lives (worse if it was being killed), it can be quite difficult. can ask the monks to mediate, but if the spirit does not listen, also no use.

Especially if the spirit want you for company for eternity.

Sometimes when I work very very late at night and alone.
And feel someone looking at you or something strange...then I will chant Amitabha/or Namo Guanshiyin Pusa (spelling mistake)....and it really works.

Share with you guys some of the interesting hearsay stories about people being possessed. I did not see them myself :
1) My colleague's uncle was possessed by 2 spirits who claimed he killed their whole family in his past life. I told her about chanting Amitabha but I don't think she believed what I said because she is a Christian.
2) My friend's neighbour flat's door is directly facing the lift. So, a lady staying in this house was possessed by an old soul. She would buy English oldies and danced cha cha, rock and roll in her house when she was possessed. 2 taoist mediums went to her house to negotiate with the spirit but the spirit said it would not leave the body. She ended up in mental hospital.
3) My uncle was possessed. By what I really don't know. He crawled and ate like a dog and asked anybody who visited him to save him. I did not visit him because my family members didn't allow. According to them, it is better to let somebody who knows how to handle the spirit or else it is better that others not to interfere because the spirit will look for anybody who gets in their way.

depending in which religion you are from? if you are christian, then you seek help from Jesus or god lor.
for buddhists, seek the monks help for mediation. if mediation doesnt help, then its likely the spirit is seeking revenge for the wrong you did to him/her in one of your past lives, if you believe in rebirth.

Yeah, except for my uncle who recovered fully from the possessed. The others which I know of all ended up in mental hospital.

Is 超度 the only thing the monk can help in this case? Asking for those who need this sort of service, chanting - how much must people pay for this?
If like you said, if the spirit wants revenge, then what can buddhists do to send the spirit away?
They will seek tanke...I ever saw a tanke (after midnite), one guy carry an wooden ambrella, one guy hit the dong, the tanke drag a long metal chain.
Look very chilly.

No, what I know the monks have other ways besides 超度.If the spirit is too fierce, they will "catch" the spirit instead of the soft approach. Usually the monk will just take "ang pao", any amount will do. It is better to send the spirit away as soon as possible, any delay is no good for the person who is possessed.
chant ratana sutra and other power sutras and parittas. usually the devas will descend and the spirit will leave the body once it see the devas coming. try metta sutra (loving kindness), it works and will permeate the whole place with loving kindness.
