this has probably been asked many times before, so sorry for the repitition. i am looking to find out more about buddhism, and am seeking a place that would welcome a foreigner. i am a keen advocate of the philosophers david hume and derek parfit. and i believe, but am not certain, that buddhism might be intellectually compatible while also offering something less arid, as well as the promise of community. feel free to direct me to old threads if this kind of topic has been covered before. i couldn't find a search funtion.thank you.
Hi, I highly recommend that you buy or borrow this book: What The Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula.
thank you for your reply. i have just read that book, which fascinated me. now i am looking to find a buddhist community that might be accepting of a westerner, trained in western philosophy, who wants to immerse himself in a tradition that is utterly new to him. i want to find out more and i am wondering which centers, in singapore, might be best for someone with my background. thanks again for the reading suggestion:can you think of anything else i might read?
I think joining a sangha is a good idea... though I am not sure which English sanghas are prominent here (though I'm sure there are plenty). Someone might want to give suggestions?
