Imagine reaching for an apple on a tree and having your hand suddenly impaled by a metal hook that drags you - the whole weight of your body pulling on that one hand - out of the air and into an atmosphere in which you cannot breath.
That is what fish - which have well-developed pain receptors, experience when they are hooked for 'Sport'.
Fishing looks painful...
I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near SÄvatthÄ« at Jeta's Grove, AnÄthapiṇá¸ika's monastery. And on that occasion, a large number of boys on the road between SÄvatthÄ« & Jeta's Grove were catching fish. Then early in the morning the Blessed One adjusted his under robe and — carrying his bowl & robes — went into SÄvatthÄ« for alms. He saw the large number of boys on the road between SÄvatthÄ« & Jeta's Grove catching little fish. Seeing them, he went up to them and, on arrival, said to them, "Boys, do you fear pain? Do you dislike pain?"
"Yes, lord, we fear pain. We dislike pain."
Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
天 地 与 我 åŒ æ ¹ï¼Œä¸‡ 物 与 我 一 体。
人性万物,一本性,相相通,相连
爱人者,人爱者,敬人者,人敬者。
(meaning: åªæœ‰çˆ±å¤©åœ°ä¸‡ç‰©ï¼Œå¤©åœ°ä¸‡ç‰©æ‰ä¼šçˆ±ä½ )
Best don't fish, don't net them, let them alone in the pond or sea...
