Physician and meditation guru Deepak Chopra has joined forces with DTS, Inc. to create an app they claim will offer an immersive sound system to create a tranquil environment for meditation that's accessible on the go.
Chopra calls the listening experience holistic and says the app, called The Non Local, produces a calming effect that reduces stress, normalises blood pressure and allows the user to sleep better.
Using DTS's Headphone:X technology, which gives the listener the impression of perceiving sound in 3D, the app plays the poetry of the 13th-centuary Persian mystic Rumi, narrated by Chopra.
According to a press release, any headphones can properly deliver the effect, indicating that binaural beats, which are commonly used for brain stimulation and relaxation exercises, are the basis of the technology.
They deliver different pitches in each ear, which creates the 3D effect, but necessitate the use of headphones, for it's difficult to create this effect using a speaker system, although Jawbone claims its Jambox is capable of playing binaural beats.
An Android version of the app will become available in December. Download the app on iOS.
Other meditation and relaxation apps that employ binaural beats include Brainwave for iOS devices and Binaural Beats Therapy and Binality for Android devices. — AFP/RelaxNews 2014
