I do pay reverence to Guan Yin, bow to Guan Yin, but I won't ask for toto numbers and all that
There are three types of people who chant or pray to the Tathagathas or Bodhisattvas...
1) He wishes for Liberation of All Sentient Beings.
2) He wishes for Liberation of Himself.
3) He wishes for material benefit from "goddesses".
A wise person will seek liberation instead of superstitions and material benefits through superstitious acts.
A question... I heard people pray to Guan Yin and they say they r buddhist. Strictly speaking r they right or wrong ? My understanding is... they r taoist...Who is guan yin? Is she a goddess?
Originally posted by Xabir:No, they probably aren't buddhists.
Because they have not taken refuge in the triple jems:
1) Buddha
2) Dharma
3) Sangha.
To be a buddhist, one must take refuge in the triple jems first.
Taoist temples don't provide refuge... only Buddhist monasteries and dharma centres would tell followers to take refuge in the triple jems.

Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent asked Buddha, "World Honored One, how does Bodhisattva Guan Shi Yin roam this Saha world? How does he convey Dharma to sentient beings? What are matters that demonstrate his power of skillful means?" Buddha told Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent, "Good man, if there were lands and sentient beings that should be saved through the body of a Buddha, then Bodhisattva Guan Shi Yin would appear as the body of a Buddha to preach Dharma to them. To those that should be saved through the body of a Pratyeka-Buddha he would appear as the body of a Pratyeka-Buddha to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of a Sravaka he would appear as the body of a Sravaka to preach Dharma.Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Guan Yin) is not interested in enjoying sex, but liberating sentient beings through any means, so gender is not a problem to the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Guan Yin is known as the "bodhisattva of compassion", and if sentient beings are more used to the idea of Female as more compassionate, Guan Yin will appear in a female form to save sentient beings.
To those that should be saved through the body of Mahabrahman he would appear as the body of Mahabrahman to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of Sakra-devanam-indra he would appear as the body of Sakra-devanam-indra to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of Isvara he would appear as the body of Isvara to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of Mahesvara he would appear as the body of Mahesvara to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of a heavenly great general he would appear as the body of a heavenly great general to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of Vaisravana he would appear as the body of Vaisravana to preach Dharma.
To those that should be saved through the body of a minor king he would appear as the body of a minor king to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of an elder he would appear as the body of an elder to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of a householder he would appear as the body of a householder to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of an official he would appear as the body of an official to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of a Brahman he would appear as the body of a Brahman to preach Dharma.
To those that should be saved through the body of a Bhiksu, Bhiksuni, Upasaka, or Upasika he would appear as the body of a Bhiksu, Bhiksuni, Upasaka, or Upasika to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of the wife of an elder, householder, official, or Brahman he would appear as the body of such a lady to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of a boy or girl he would appear as the body of a boy or girl to preach Dharma.
To those that should be saved through the body of a heavenly being, dragon, Yaksa, Gandharva, Asura, Garuda, Kimnara, Mahoraga, human, or non-human he would appear as all those to preach Dharma. To those that should be saved through the body of a Vajrapani he would appear as the body of a Vajrapani to preach Dharma. - Lotus Sutra chapt.25

If anyone wants to hurt you and pushes you into a great fire-pit, if you contemplate the power of Avalokitesvara, the fire-pit will change into a pond. - Lotus SutraSo, this is what the translation says. But my master explained that, the "great-fire-pit" refers to the fires of hatred and anger, while the pond, clear and pure, refers to our Buddhamind. This relates to a true story, or experience, back in Taiwan.
So, can I say that "Guan Yin" is just a way of "being"? I mean like when someone "being" compassion, then he is "Guan Yin" at that time.Originally posted by An Eternal Now:Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva have a thousand hands...
These hands could be you and me, to reach out to the sentient beings with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's compassion.
Bodhisattvas, in Buddhism, are very important figures we should learn from. They are the role models of the Mahayana Buddhism.
* 3 clean meats:
Addressing the monks, Buddha said: "Do not eat meat knowing that it has been killed specially for (your) use; I allow the use of fish and meat blameless [NOTE1] in three ways, unseen, unheard and unsuspected" (na bhikkave jâna.m udissakata ma.msa.m paribhunjitabba.m. Anujânâmi bhikkave tiko.tiparisuddha.m maccama.msa.m adi.t.ta.m asuta.m aparisankitan ti [V I 233]). We shall refer to this rule as the Buddha's three-fold rule on meat eating [NOTE 2]. The three conditions postulated amount to not witnessing the actual killing, not being told that the meat had been specially killed (for the use of the consumer), and even in the absence of such information not suspecting that such was the case (i.e. the eye, ear and mind should be satisfied as to the "blamelessness" of the meat).
