Proper warm up and warm down is very crucial. Warm up to stretch ur muscles and get it ready for the run...this is to prevent injuries. Warm down is to stretch and cool down ur muscles. This will help you to recover faster from the exercise and prevent muscles arching etc.
Drink lots of water before exercise, and make sure your food intake before the run has sufficient time to "disolve" before your exercise. Wear the right kind of clothes and shoe will help as well.
Listen to your body...dont overstretched.

U should start drinking about 1-2hours before the run. 20mins before the run might be too short a time.
depending on ur distance and time for your run. u should drink according. remember those days of water parade that we do before any PT lesson?
