Actually, a colleague of mine said that when she moved into her new flat, the windows were without grills and she was ok with it.
UNTIL, theft happened.
After that, she installed grills for security and peace-of-mind. -
friends who went to uni in WA were burgled...
so instead of hassling the landlord for grills, they bought a trap for the house in case of more burglars
supposedly something like this:
i think they were joking.. but they're mad enough to do it -

I live on the 2nd storey and whilst I enjoy throwing my windows wide open for the lovely breeze, I also recognise that it's going to be fairly easy for robbers to climb up to my apartment because of the way the block is structured.
Sometimes, at night, this thought kinda scares me.
Besides, there's always this Sadako twit to worry about. I figure if she could climb out of the well and out of the TV, she'd be able to climb up, scale the walls, and climb in through my windows too!
Speaking of which, there's now a real security breach besides the windows being grill-less... one of my bedroom windows has been smashed by falling concrete from the upgrading works and whilst the window is still intact, a little nudge will send the glass shards shattering, leaving a gaping hole where my window's supposed to be. Don't know how long the cracks will hold and how long it'll take to replace it but it sure is something that worries me, especially when night falls. -
I don't think burglars would scale the sides of a hdb flat and enter via window leh. Oh well, I guess we're prepared for burglars with abseiling skills.

Actually, there are ropes, pipeslines and concrete structures around due to the upgrading works and it's mighty easy for the short climb. You've raised a good point. For now the likelihood of a spiderman climbing up the exterior of my block is small... but can't discount possiblity of structures erected outside during maintenance works in future

I never worried about stuff like that when I lived on the 19th floor and the 22nd floor... Then, I'd only worry about Batman and what-not! hahahaha! (But then again, if it was George Clooney or Val Kilmer or whichever hunk you can think of under that skin-tight suit, who'd mind, man!!! I guess I'm still a 'high flyer'... I still prefer living high up, if I have to live in a flat / apartment. -
