Not counting NS (which is effectively indentured labour!), I have never worked in Singapore, so I do not have a basis for comparison. But I think it is safe to say that most North American companies place a greater emphasis on employee welfare than, say, companies in Singapore. Perhaps the tighter labour laws, strong unions and the litigious nature of society here account for that. I find the management of my organization to be very open and responsive to employee needs. For example, a few months ago, I mentioned in passing to my tech supervisor that I found my monitor to be somewhat harsh on the eyes. The very next day, when I arrived for work, I found that the old CRT monitor had been replaced by a brand-spanking-new LCD panel.

You know? Where I am, if an individual is proposed for promo to say VP level? The Board of Directors (of the Bank) call the shots. Not one's immediate Manager.
Then, a confidential survey will be sent to the candidate's subordinates. If the comments come back negative.......then, too bad, the candidate will have to wait. He/she will be scheduled to go for some management skills improvement courses, blah, blah. The institution will feedback to HR who works in alignment with the Board. If pass, then only the promo can happen, otherwise, bye bye.
So, over here, senior management doesn't mean "tai sai". The ikan bilis got outlet to report them too. But it's all about respect and individual rights. The Bank recognizes that sometimes we pick a lower level job to suit our lifestyle. Not because of our inability. Some people like their hours, or like the kind of job. No one is penalized. To each his own. Like I said, if you want to make the money, then of course, you'll have to put in the hours. If you just want a job and go home, there are such jobs too.
I have a girlfriend, also S'porean. She was quite up there as a FC in the Bank. Usually, the higher level you are, the harder you work. When come to crunch time, her analysts can go home, but she can't. The stress got too much. Triggered various health problems. In the end? She opted for demotion. And now, she is happy. -

strange thing.. i enjoy my job.. it's the senior management and their politicking and backstabbing that buggers things up...
i think our friendly neighbourhood mutantdude recognises how interesting my job can be...
too bad senior management has to be there

I just came back from the mall. Bought hubby some of those imitation cologne. Aiyah, he got good ones lah, but the way he spray, like spray insecticide like that, so better get him cheap ones for everyday use and then use the ex ones for outings.
No lunch leh but bought some nuts to munch.
You leh? Doing what work? Not appropriate to disclose here, never mind. You continue and we will play catching as and when lah hor? -

Just watched wedding crashers today,darn hilarious..But now i'm so sleepy, clocking around 6 hours of sleep a day and tmr lesson's at 9..

So far, no problem. It's actually cheaper at the flea markets. Four bottles (any choice) for C$20, no tax. That's the fun, with shopping at flea markets. And then we can buy farmers' goods (baked and fresh veggies). BTW, it is quite a popular imitation brand lah.
Late July, our town has a RibFest and boy, did it reminded me of pasar malam. So cool! And there was a rock band playing too. -

like in melbourne.. summers at Vic Market... it's like a festival with jazz being played... i took the time to have a brewski and watch the people at a nice pub with a nice balcony overlooking the market -

and... here in singapore, it's almost the same too... never felt that i belonged anywhere...
i'll be able to adapt anywhere... but i have this feeling, i may never feel i belong anywhere..
