That's cause in the old days, they probably did that. Now, the midwives would give baby a good suction to make sure Jr can breathe well without secretions obstructing his passageway.
You know why when babies first come out, they HAVE to cry loud-loud??
That's because up till then, they've been living in a water-filled environment, so the alveolus in the lungs are all deflated. That first cry is baby's very first breath that send air rushing into the airways, channeled by the carina into the bronchus and then, pop! pop! pop!... all the alveoli's pop open, and baby breathes room air like mom and dad!
No first cry, the doc and midwives have to do something to make baby take that first deep breath, otherwise, the alveolus doesn't inflate and open, and baby goes into oxygen deprivation. -
