Answer : It's a living thing.
It IS a living thing right from the point of conception, when the sperm merges with the egg and fertilisation occurs. That's when life begins and a foetus starts to slowly develop as that complicated mitosis, meiosis what-not thing occurs. (Sorry, 80% of knowledge returned to school lecturers! 
)
I guess folks try to 'soften the blow' and 'lessen the guilt' by arguing that it is not a living thing, and it's just a 'mass of cells', and NOT a baby, in the early stages.
That's like saying, a seed that has been planted in the tilled ground and is slowly undergoing germinating with the shoots slowly sprouting, is not a living thing.
It's also like a surgeon looking at your liver when you're at the operating table and saying, "It's just an organ, a mass of living tissue and by itself, it's not a living thing!" -

My PE lessons in school ..anyhow played basketball in JC, and mostly jogging to pass the 2.4km run. In Sec sch...all I cd remember was this psyho (he must be, altho he's married with kids) PE teacher who would make us run 2 rounds of the basketball court, then sat us all down to listen to his crapping about everything except PE. We barely need to sweat, and this goes on week after week. We could not complain, coz he is the PE master...Mr Ling!! Tsk..tsk...
Used to do more swimming and cycling, now doing aerobics and a bit of pilates...just to keep the old bones moving, u know.

Do you know why we sometimes bite our own inner lips?
The old folks would say it's heatiness that causes the lips to swell, hence you tend to bite it.
But when I bite it, it's like a sudden, reflex action that causes me to give a hard bite during chewing, so it's not like the lips had been swollen/bulging and waiting for me to bite into it.
After the bite, it becomes an ulcer and can heal by itself. But can it get infected? -
