Giving ang pao is a tradition lah, so why must you break the tradition by not accepting ang pao? I hate to oblige others due to some customary practised over the years with its value dragged by those barbaric idiots who comments about the amount given.
The wedding dinner is but an event. It's like choosing between char kway teow and abalone soup. You can alway re-invent the event.
The angpow is a meaningful gift, but the best gift during a wedding is not the number of gifts collected, but the number of sincere wishes amongst the guests. I rather have more sincere wishes, than to have more gifts.
The material gift is nothing but a farce to showoff one's capability nowadays such that I rather force my guest to do without.
'Ren lai jiu ke yi, hong bao fang zai jia li'.
Nothing is better than having a good crowd than one that goes on about how much the table's worth.
Btw, how do you know if the wish is sincere? -

ok side-track a little, i was just talking to my wife a while ago about dinners that stretch on extremely late. I ever attended one where the guest only got to leave at almost 12 midnight. all the kids were already sleeping on their daddy's lap.
