a) Women - When women say that they dont need the dinner and bla bla bla, that is BS. Every women love to wear that wedding gown and dinner dress for the wedding dinner. If you dont do it now, this will become a topic of arguement after the marriage.
b) Your partner's relative - These are the worst bunch of people to deal with. You dont know them, but they know you. IF you dont throw a proper dinner, they will think that you are not good husband lah, stingy lah, cannot take care of your wife etc...
c) Your parents - This is still manageable since parents will always love their kids regardless if there is a wedding dinner.
As for the $$$, chinese wedding dinner will pay by itself. Only thing you need to be careful is the alcohol. Best if you dont serve them at all. If you need to, get a dinner package that include free flow of beers. Red wine is a killer. Avoid it if you dont have budget for it. Last by not least, try not to invite muslim. they are addition cost to the table and usually they dont turn up.

Just came back from a taste session of the food that will be served in my bro's Chinese wedding dinner.
Confirmed... this event is for the parents of both sides. My bro and his wife sat there and kinda allowed the parents to plan the details. They're easy-going so the parents get a lotta say.
It's really more for the parents than for themselves. The parents are inviting their friends, colleagues, neighbours, and goodness knows who else!
I think these dinners are a platform for the parents to kinda strut around like peacocks, being super proud of their kids. It's really their way of announcing that they've done their part as parents already and now, their kids' all grown up and starting his/her own family.
A rite of life to them. A sorta milestone.
Still, I find it ... overwhelming and scary! I still find myself thinking, ''Thank goodness it isn't me!!''

I just returned from dinner and a shopping spree with mom and an aunt and we were discussing my brother's Chinese wedding dinner over supper. I had the shock of my life!!
- Mom says dad will have like 10 tables of guests, she will have 15, the in-laws wanted 10, and including my brother and his wife's guests, it's a grand total of 45 tables!!
At $800 per table, that makes it a grand total of... *gasp... Wha!!!!! $36,000!!!!!
I made the mistake of saying out loud, "Poor brother! He will end up having 80% of guests at his wedding who are total strangers to him!"
And then, I kena a huge scolding from mom, who got wide-eyed defensive and exclaimed, "Of course! He's MY son! It's a BIG DEAL!" 
filled up the whole restaurant, and in the end he still earned $10k+ from the ang paos he got.
And the hotels, restaurants wont take your money until the dinner over, there will be a person from your side keep on calculating the money when dinner ends so that will know how much you get.
e.g. you order from the hotel/restaurant, cuz its order at bulk, its $600 per table, you order 50 tables.
If people come, each give $80, you get $80x50x10 person per table = $40,000.
But the cost of dinner is only $600x50=$30,000
All these assuming you invite people not whole family with many kids one.

actually no hotel or restaurant will let u pay after the dinner
normally they will wan u to pay a deposit
wad people can do is..go to the bank and get a letter like a guarantee or something..and also to extend the credit limit...den pass it to the hotel and they will let u settle the bill on the day of dinner itself or the next day -
I think my bro mentioned that if they paid a month in advance, they'll receive a 15% discount. And then, on that night itself, they'd have to pay for any 'extras' that had been incurred.
15% can be a pretty hefty sum, esp if the total bill is a large amount! -

BTW, I've attended chinese wedding dinners in both singapore and malaysia. Why is it that in every single case, the Malaysians arrive on time or before time but the Singaporeans mostly arrive LATE??? WTF is wrong with us?
