I think the Empress was trying to protect herself, the emperor can remove her. So i think if she had a son that was in line to be the emperor she'll be set for life after the death of the emperor.

Actually, no one can remove the Empress from her post, unless she does something wrong and the Emperor removes her from her status. Not easy to do that too cause he'll have to observe the ancestors' rules.
Like what the show revealed, the Empress cannot be retired... she can only be removed from her post by the Emperor, or die. -

and the other 2 shifts are easy...
